Opening: Amano and Yamamoto @ LBP

DSC_0668

This past Saturday Yoshitaka Amano opened up his LA solo with us at LeBasse Projects and was also joined by LBP artist Yoskay Yamamoto who created a site specific installation for the occasion. Amano’s other show this month is a retrospective at MOCA Taipei so this was a great opportunity for us at the gallery.

Yoskay’s installation was also a huge hit as both his and Amano’s fans walked through the “rain” in the Project Room. Also debuting was Yoskay’s first fine art multiple sculptures which sold out quickly. More in this series will be showcased in June at Yamamoto’s solo exhibition.

The show runs through March 13th so make sure to stop by. More pics after the jump:

Preview: Amano and Yamamoto @ LeBasse Projects

DSC_0407

LeBasse Projects is getting ready for our biggest show ever. You hear that cliche a lot in the art world, but in this case its true. We are hosting Yoshitaka Amano’s LA exhibition for ‘Deva Loka’ – a body of work created to show in the US. Amano is one of the most influential artists working today and you can clearly see his influences in the work of Takashi Murakami and others. Amano’s show in LA runs concurrently with his solo exhibit at MOCA Taipei.

To add to the excitement we have an incredible installation that Yoskay Yamamoto is putting up in our Project Room as an homage to Amano. We also have created our first collaborative edition of sculptures with Yamamoto which will debut this Saturday. Hope to see everyone at the show.

It’s an exclusive, invitation only event, hosted in original and unusual spaces across selected European cities including Dublin, London, and most recently, Paris (08-09). Art Mosh showcases a one-off collection of photography, sculpture, live painting and sketches, ensuring a diverse and arresting range of work from some of today’s most talented artists. Art Mosh discovers and showcases talent, both established and emerging. Their important crossover relationship within the music sector also ensures a multimedia event, with DJ’s and live acts performing dangerously close to the art.

Shows: Kokeshi @ Japanese American Musuem

This weekend opened the “Kokeshi” show curated by designer Christina Conway at the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles, which has been showing some great emerging work as of late.

Kokeshi featured nearly 100 custom traditional Japanese Kokeshi dolls from some of the most talented artists in the emerging contemporary scene including Amy Sol, Travis Louie, Yoskay Yamamoto, Tara McPherson, Kozyndan and more.

What was even better was that the museum had an entire exhibit of traditional Kokeshi and a timeline of Kokeshi dolls through history to give you a real sense of the importance of the doll in Japanese culture. An excellent display and a worthwhile excuse to visit JANM.

Culver City Artwalk @ LeBasse Projects

Saturday was the 4th Annual Culver City Artwalk and our 1st year participating in the new gallery. With a much larger space tha last year, we still managed to fill the gallery with walkers, baby-strollers and dogs. We also had a new show on view with work from gallery represented artists like Nate Frizzell, Edwin Ushiro, Tessar Lo and Yoskay Yamamoto, alog with work from some new artists to the gallery like Thomas Doyle, Morgan Slade, Alexandros Vasmoulakis and Joe Black.

Some of the new faces created some real showstoppers. Joe Black’s 2000 button collage was creating a bottleneck all day into the back rooms, and we were forced to post interns to protect Thomas Doyle’s sculptures from the hands of eager children and their equally enthralled parents.
