The Strozzina Centre for Contemporary Culture at the Palazzo Strozzi in Florence, Italy just opened (3.8) ‘American Dreamers: Reality and Imagination in Contemporary American Art’ showcasing captivating visions of eleven American artists with including Laura Ball, Adrien Broom, Nick Cave, Will Cotton, Adam Cvijanovic, Richard Deon, Thomas Doyle (above), Mandy Greer, Kirsten Hassenfeld, Patrick Jacobs, and Christy Rupp. Curated by Bartholomew F. Bland, the museum exhibition offers a range of ‘dreams’ including Cotton’s beautiful vixens atop cotton-candy clouds, Cave’s otherworldly ‘soundsuits’, Mandy Greer’s immersive mythological installation teeming with flora and fauna realized in sculpture, and Thomas Doyle’s arresting sculptures, microcosms for a society on the brink, teetering precariously on the edge.
Courtesy of Thomas Doyle who made the trip to Florence, we’re bringing you a closer look at the exhibition, including close-up shots of his installation which features select pieces from several of his recent solo exhibitions. ‘American Dreamers’ was widely anticipated with awareness raised through a city-wide campaign featuring banners, signs and even bus wraps. The effort proved quite successful with a tremendous turn-out for the opening reception which Doyle estimated at over 1100 people. The exhibit runs through July 15th, 2012. If you have been contemplating visiting Florence but somehow still haven’t made it so, you now officially have no excuse.

Looking to capture the imaginations of children, Royal/T will present contemporary art at ‘eye level’ with ‘TAG You’re It!’ opening on Saturday (1.14). Curated by Amber Noland (Art Collection Management), the exhibit will feature examples of high art that lend themselves to be appreciated by children as well as adults, including Your Dog (a giant dog) by Yoshitomo Nara, Beatrice (a fairy cloud princess) by Will Cotton, and Bhangra Remix (gilded turn tabs) by Jim Lambie. Continuing with the theme of drawing children into the world of art, Royal/T will offer ‘ART TAG’ a conceptual game of ‘hide and seek’ between exhibit viewers and the ideas contained in the exhibited works.
