47-DSC_2085

I Hate Everyone but You featuring art work and installations by Tim Biskup and Matt Goldman opened this past Friday (11.12) @ De La Barracuda on Melrose.  Primarily a retrospective, the exhibit features a nice overview of Biskup’s work and in particular his large scale sculptures  including three giant Helpers, a large Flat Cali pyramid, and a large Bronze Stack Pack.  And… an amazing amount of his vinyl art toys – it’s easy to forget just how many sweet toys he’s done.  In addition to his new Astro Boy and Vader piece, Tim also showed off a nice selection of previous paintings.  For his piece of the pie, Matt Goldman presented a nice array of screen prints and Tees on a large wall – very nice work. If you missed it, go check it out for the large installations as well the chance to pickup toys and other art products you might have missed the first time around.  Enjoy the pics after the jump.

Preview: Tim Biskup & Matt Goldman – I Hate Everyone But You (11.13)

Exit Strategy. Tim Biskup.

Exit Strategy. Tim Biskup.

Last week we previewed I Hate Everyone But You featuring the art of Tim Biskup and Matt Goldman.  Here’s an update on the show which opens this Friday, November 13th from 7-10 PM @ De La Barracuda on Melrose.  Rather than exhibiting a completely new body of work, Biskup will present a retrospective with several new pieces sprinkled in. For what may very well be his “biggest  LA show yet”, Biskup will offer new paintings, several large sculptures many of which have yet to be seen, as well as previously released pieces from his archives

On the painting side, there will be the  Vader and Astro Boy pieces which we revealed last time. On the sculpture side there’s the premiere of the 9 foot tall “Exit Strategy” sculpture (above).  This one seems to be an extension of his work done for his  ‘08 Operating System show in Paris as well as the more recent Mystic Temple of Self-Entitlement installation in Rome.    Matt Goldman will be offering vibrant silk-screened prints and an “enormous wall-piece”.   Be there this Friday to revel  in the large-scale experience.

Studio Visit – Tim Biskup on ‘The Mystic Chords of Memory’

Recently Dailydujour had the pleasure of  visiting Tim Biskup’s studio as he was finishing up pieces for his next solo, The Mystic Chords of Memory, which opens this Thursday, June 4th at Iguapop in Barcelona.   A reference to Abraham Lincoln’s inaugural address, the title of the new show hints at an awakening from dark times and points to a more promising future.

While his work is at some level highly public as it is viewed in galleries and on numerous products, Biskup’s work is in reality intensely introspective.  Painting is a means of self-expression and perhaps more importantly discovery.  While his recent work has taken a turn for the darker mirroring uncertainty in his life, this newest collection of work is colorful and joyous matching a new found happiness and comfort-level in his personal development.

In terms of the aesthetic elements, Biskup returns to his use of facets a style he “loves”.  This new show also sees him  painting bubbly, voluptuous women — a very enjoyable first for him.  Fun and joy of creation was a theme that ran through the conversation during our visit.  Tim Biskup continues to evolve his painting style as a means of self-expression — a continually stimulating journey.

A Closer Look: Tim Biskup’s Mystic Temple of Self Entitlement

Tim Biskup and the Mystic Temple of Self Entitlement. Photo by Nytha.

It’s been a week (5.13) since  Tim Biskup thrilled Rome with his Mystic Temple of Self-Entitlement live-performance installation at the Dorothy Circus gallery.  The installation features five wooden temples designed by Biskup – one for each of the four elements and one for humanity (in the form of his signature Helper character).

The performance ?  Biskup used a catapult he designed to launch rubber balls at his wooden installation, destroying it while the audience cheered him on.  Here’s a look at the Mystic Temple of Self-Entitlement via a short and sweet video courtesy of the gallery and a nice action shot by Nytha from her Flickr photostream.

Tim Biskup – The Mystic Temple of Self-Entitlement

As we write this Tim Biskup should be in Rome presenting or is that destroying his ‘Mystic Temple of Self-Entitelment’ installation just outside of the Dorothy Circus gallery.  While the gallery originally asked Biskup to do live painting, we’re thankful that the municipality of Rome agreed to sponsor his ‘kinetic’ installation which features give wooden pyramids – one for each of the four elements and for humanity.

To give you a better idea of the installation dynamic, here’s a look at prototype of the sixth installation element – a Biskup designed wooden catapult which launches rubber balls.
