Seen: Tran Nguyen – Nurturing the Uneased Soul

2_DSC_0713

Tran Nguyen considers the psychological distress weighing down so many of us and seeks to alleviate it with her newest solo, Nurturing the Uneased Soul, which opened Friday evening (3.12) in Thinkspace’s Project room.  Her finely rendered fantastic and surreal paintings with a look towards the past are intended as a form of visual therapy meant to lend a sense of order and calm to the viewer.  Using a mix of colored pencils and acrylics, Nguyen creates an aesthetic that celebrates the beauty and foibles of humanity. Currently completing her BFA in illustration, Nguyen has just begun to share her vision.    Nurturing the Uneased Soul runs through April 2nd.  For artwork availability, check the official preview page.

Preview: Cry for Help (1.8)

Bumble Bee Installation

Thinkspace will present the opening of the  Cry for Help group show this Friday, January 8th (7-11 PM).  Featuring over 100 artists, the show seeks to raise awareness of the plight of endangered species.  Twenty percent of the show proceeds will be donated to Born Free USA, a non-profit charity committed to protecting wildlife.

Dailydujour had the pleasure of dropping by the gallery for an advanced look at the show pieces and Bumblebee working on his front room install.  The install features a life-size paper maiche tree made with hive and his trademark Bumblebee mini sculptures. Made from Yellow Page books, the sculpture  is a comment on the continued existence of unnecessary man-made objects to the detriment of the environment.

We came away impressed with the show – around every corner  there was a piece that caught our eye and beautifully captured the cry of an endangered animal.  Perhaps interestingly or just by coincidence, several drawings stood out including pieces from Edwin Ushiro and Rob Sato. Hit the jump for preview images of these and other show pieces.

This show is not to be missed.  In addition to the original art, Thinkspace will release three limited-edition prints from Amy Sol, Buff Monster, and Liz Mcgrath.  Each print is limited to 30 pieces and will be available for a very reasonable $50.  Come early if you would like to purchase a print.

Behind the Scenes: Dabs Myla – Earthquake Weather (12.12)

1-DSC_4325

The Australian duo of Dabs Myla made an impressive splash with their Golden Age show at New Puppy about a month back.  They continue their roll in the States with ‘Earthquake Weather’ showing on the Fresh Faces wall tonight, December 11th @ Thinkspace.

Dailydujour dropped by the gallery on Wednesday while the two were working on a wall mural installation.  Their expansive wall mural installations for Golden Age were really impressive and incredibly labor intensive.  To tackle the change of producing detailed wall installations, Dabs Myla have a streamlined process – they layout the mural beforehand with a complete color call out.  Additionally, they pre-mix all the colors in numbered containers.  The result of this level of planning are wall installations that begin to approach the detail they achieve intheir original paintings.  Hit the jump for a quick look at the mural in progress and be sure to come out tonight to view the completed mural and their new paintings.

Behind the Scenes: Jesse Hotchkiss — Learning to Fall (12.11)

1-DSC_4381

Dailydujour had the pleasure of visiting Thinkspace while Jesse Hotchkiss was working on a detailed hand-painted title mural for “Learning to Fall” which opens tonight December 11th (7-11 PM).  The lettering on the wall is really detailed and adds a personal touch above and beyond the standard vinyl wall graphic.  Jesse’s work has a wondrous feel with a touch of mystery.  Hit the jump for additional photos including a quick preview of his new work.

Preview: Andy Kehoe – The World Unseen and Those in Between (12.11)

Caretaker of the Beacons. Andy Kehoe.

Caretaker of the Beacons. Andy Kehoe.

Through a new collection of oil and acrylic on wood paintings, Portland artist Andy Kehoe explores his personal anxiety and vulnerability in these troubling times for his upcoming ‘The World Unseen and Those in Between’ opening Friday, December 11th @ Thinkspace. Isolation and solitude against the immense backdrop of the natural world are key themes that run through Kehoe’s work.  In fact, the show’s title refers to an otherworldly existence populated by the deceased, the never lived, and those awaiting their turn.    Click through to view an early look at Kehoe’s new show selected from Thinkspace’s official sneak peek Flickr album.

Interview with Esao Andrews

esao 6

The artist, Esao Andrews, hard at work

Esao Andrews has been called a Gothic grotesque painter, dark erotic painter, pop surrealist and so much more.  As much as people love to pigeon-hole artists and stick them in a nicely labeled box, Andrews somehow continues to defy categorization as his work moves from light to dark, playful to serious, sexy to sick…sometimes all within one body of paintings.  He has also shown his love of variety through his toy designs, incredible illustrations for music bands, comic book work and so much work.  It is this dedication to difference that sets his work apart from many of the New Contemporary painters who choose to create the same character and/or scenarios in each painting.  Andrews has also proven himself a survivor who is seriously dedicated to his craft having slowly and steadily established himself over the last 10 years as one of the most consistent and unique painters working today.  On the brink of his upcoming solo exhibition at Thinkspace Gallery, Andrews took a break from his hectic schedule to answer a few questions about yesterday, today and tomorrow…

Seen: Camilla d’Errico and Caia Koopman – Vain Remains

Vain Remains, featuring the art of Camilla d’Errico and Caia Koopman, opened this past Thursday @ Thinkspace Gallery near the Sunset Junction. The two artists’ styles mesh well –  female subjects rendered in styles featuring elements of popular  illustration.  That said each has a distinct aesthetic that is immediately recognizable.  If you’re looking for  pop culture infused female portraits that tend towards the fantastic and ethereal sides of life, this show is a must see. Vain Remains will be on show until October 2nd, 2009.   Check on the availability of show artwork on the official show page.
