Blue.Print.For.Space – Primary Flight Adds Indoor Component (12.2)

blue-print-for-space

Art Basel Miami is almost upon us.  While most of the attention and press goes to the numerous art fairs, we’re big fans of  Primary Flight which is  billed as “The world’s largest site-specific street level mural installation”.  From our experience last year, the description seems spot-on – the world’s top street artists and writers hitting large expanses of wall throughout the Wynwood district of Miami.  Last year was great and we’re assuming ‘09 will match it.

In addition to bringing the best urban art to the streets of Miami, Primary Flight is also taking things indoor with Blue.Print.For.Space an exhibition of street art @ Artcenter/South Florida.  Opening on December 1st with a reception on the 2nd (8-10 PM), the show features work by Augor, Bask, Blackbooks, Chris Stain, Cruz, Jim & Tina Darling, D*Face, Dolla, El Mac, Ron English, Shepard Fairey, Logan Hicks, The London Police, Meggs, Mike De Feo, Kenton Parker, Pisa 73, Push, Santiago Rubino, Retna, Reyes, Revok, She Kills Me, Jeff Soto, Stormie Mills, Tes One, Typoe, Augustina Woodgate and Zevs.  Definitely worth checking out if you’re doing Basel this year.

Seen: Big Geezers

Curated by The London Police, the Big Geezers group show  succeeded in presenting a high-energy, engaging art opening @ Scion Installation in LA this past Saturday evening.  While the large crowd certainly came from the urban art stylings of the Geezers –  The London Police, Galo, Pez, Morky, Miss Riel, Flying Fortress, Wayne Horse, Abner Preis and Minivila, they stayed for the carnival atmosphere complete with a very popular balloon dart toss (revealing a huge collabo wall mural), Nerf shooting gallery complete with targets created by the artists, and more.

While there were plenty of reasonably priced pieces available for sale (the gallery passes 100% of the purchase price to the artists), this was not your typical art opening.  An onlooker seemed disturbed that the “installations” were “almost too interactive”.  This was Chaz’s vision and he and the other Geezers delivered in spades.

The wall murals that flank the massive Scion space were quite impressive — from the collabo theatrical red/white piece revealed during the balloon toss to the almost indescribable mixed-media extravaganza featuring drawings, painted elements, cereal boxes, and a G ‘n R shirt.

In terms of individual pieces, we’re partial to the four LA-ized Teddy Troops from Flying Fortress.  If you missed the opening, definitely go for the murals — impressive work.  You’ll be gazing at The London Police’s circular tour de force and Galo’s impeccable wall for quite some time.

Preview – Big Geezers @ Scion (11.8)

Opening tomorrow night  Big Geezers is definitely a must-see show.  It’s the latest exhibition by the Geezers — a growing group of international urban artists curated by Chaz of The London Police.  This show features the work of The London Police, Galo, Pez, Morky, Miss Riel, Flying Fortress, Wayne Horse, Abner Preis and Minivila.

We rolled through for a sneak peek on Thursday and came away quite impressed with the grand scale of the work and the overall carnival show concept. And of course,  we couldn’t resist bringing back some preview shots — plenty more after the jump.

Chaz explained that they wanted to give show goers a memorable experience that would compel them to stay throughout the night.  He’s keenly aware that most people spend maybe 15 minutes viewing pieces in an art show and then either drift off to another venue or stay for the refreshments.   In order to change that up, the Geezers have a wild interactive carnival setup with various game stations.  The audience will be asked to play for a chance to win prizes from each artist.  This art carnival was created with an unlimited supply of creativity, energy, and $170 of recycled wood.

While we can’t spoil all the games, we can say that there will be a wheel of fortune filled with winning spots except for one “loser” spot.  There’s also a huge collaborative mural that will start the night covered in balloons and will be revealed progressively by way of a “dart toss”. You’ll take away some fun memories and maybe a cool art object or two as well.

While there’s an emphasis on interactivity, the art is of course central to the show.  It’s quite good — the huge wall murals in particular  are impressive. Galo’s massive wall had us wishing we could carve out a chunk to take home.   Several of the artists will be offering individual pieces for sale  including Flying Fortress, Pez, and The London Police + others.

Big Geezers opens tomorrow evening — Saturday, November 8th [7-10 PM] @ the Scion Space in Culver City, don’t miss it.  Seriously.
