Shepard Fairey – Printed Matters (9.16)

PrintedMatters_webinvite_front_FNL_001

Shepard Fairey will open his Printed Matters solo on Thursday September 16th (8-11 PM) @ Subliminal Projects.  As the title suggets, this show celebrates printing and in particular the art print which in many ways has become a staple of Fairey’s artistic endeavors and output.  The  artist’s first solo @ Subliminal Projects since its relocation to Echo Park,  Printed Matters will feature printed work on wood, metal, album covers, and fine art collage paper.

While not officially announced, it appears that Subliminal Projects will release a new large-format edition of Shepard’s timely ‘Dark Wave’ print (from Modern Multiples)  in conjunction with the show opening. Dark Wave stands as a reminder of the recent ecological disaster in the Gulf of Mexico.

Subliminal Projects will also host a book signing for ‘Beyond the Street:  The 100 Leading Figures in Urban Art’ prior to the show’s  opening (9.16, 7-8 PM). Edited by Patrick Nyguen and Stuart Mackenzie, the volume published by Gestalten celebrates street art by providing insight into the careers and motivations of the key  people and institutions behind its creation and proliferation. Several of  the artists and industry insiders featured in the book will be on-hand for the signing including Shepard and Amanda Fairey, Dave Kinsey, Jana DesForges (BLK/MRKT), Marsea Goldberg (New Image), Retna and Saber [Sources:  Obeygiant.com and Modern Multiples on Facebook].

Shepard Fairey’s gallery, Subliminal Projects, presents The Homebody, a solo exhibition of new original works of Philadelphia-based artist Jim Houser.  Through his paintings, installations and mixed-media pieces, Houser tempers earnest introspection with whimsical characters, warm colors and organic materials.  Known for his hand-lettered abstract poetry and quilt-like grids, Houser explores the act of transforming lifeless panels and objects into vehicles for expression.  His “canvases” have included skateboards, guitars, flowerpots and basketballs.

Shows: Digital Media @ Subliminal Projects (6.5)

Picture 9

Los Angeles-based Skullphone’s new solo exhibition, “Digital Media,” opening June 5 at Subliminal Projects, reveals an aesthetic departure from the artist’s previous work informed by his recent exploits with outdoor electronic advertisement.

While the artist had previously exhibited with found wood, weathered metal, and wheat-pasted paper, “Digital Media” features mirror-polished, black-painted aluminum panels. Painting with an impressionistic dot grid system of a strict red, green, and blue palette, Skullphone evokes the LCD monitors on television sets and computers. Ultimately, the display explores advertising, government and private enterprise signage, and the media-laden California landscape, turning transient digital phenomena into permanent pieces.

Visit Subliminal Projects for more on the show and the artist.
