Oakland artist Scott Hove will open his Iced Out solo this Friday, April 2nd as the first show in the newly constructed Gallery II at La Luz de Jesus. The show features Hove’s Cakeland series of sculptures which combine the sweet cakes of all sizes and shapes, with the not-so-sweet, teeth, horns, and other defensive mechanisms. Created to reflect on attractive yet artificial substitutes for happiness, the ‘cakes’ confront the viewer with an enticing initial impression which is quickly dashed as the animalistic elements including sharp teeth come into focus. Satisfaction is fleeting, quickly replaced by the nagging feeling that it is in reality out of reach.
The cakes are an amalgamation of carved polyurethane foam and plywood decorated with acrylic media frosting, faux fuirts and found objects. They vary in size from life-like dimensions all the way up to surreal proportions including the 94” x 94” VLC (very large chandelier) and the Cake Vault Installation (108” x 108” x 108”).
To celebrate the opening of Iced Out and with it Gallery II which replaces the recently closed BSFA, sweet treats from the All American Softy Truck as well as Sharlena Fong’s pastries will be available at the opening. Come for the decadent art and stay for the edible sweets. For more information on artwork availability, check the official preview page.
