Shows: ‘Infinity’ at Scion Gallery

DSC00178

Our friend Andres Guerrero dropped off some images from this weekends show at Scion Space LA. Andres is part of a show being curated by DD fave Andrew Schoultz. After the jump are some great installation and setup images. Check out the show this Saturday.

Andrew’s show is called “Infinity,” and is a group exhibition of artists whose practices or aesthetics relate to the many facets of the infinite. The Vastness of this concept will be explored through painting, drawing, photography, and 3D multi-media installation. The subject matter as well as the medium will vary greatly. Some artists work may be a more literal representation of this subject, suggestive of such things as mathematics, space, time, technology, abstraction, pattern, or repetition, while others have chosen to address the opposite or “finite”, such as fragility, mortality, the temporary, and even doomsday scenarios.

You’re going to be impressed by the ingenuity and creativity of this group for sure.

The show is open from October 10th – November 7th, 2009

Opening Reception: Saturday, October 10th, 2009 | 7-10pm

DD guest bloggers/artists Edwin Ushiro and Tessar Lo just got back from NY where they attended the Scion Installation Tour in which they both have pieces. Looks like they also had quite a time visiting some galleries and events in Manhattan. Take a look at Edwin’s photos here and Tessar’s here.

Seen: “Sao Paulo” at Scion

The new “Sao Paulo” show at Scion is by far the best show I’ve seen there. Curated by Choque Cultural in association with Jonathan Levine Gallery, it features work by Calma, Carlos Dias, Ramon Martins, MZK, Silvana Mello, Speto, Titi Freak & Zezao. The colors were absolutely amazing, and the opening on Saturday night was packed.

São Paulo @ Scion Installation LA (2.28)

The São Paulo group show opening on Saturday, February 28th [7-10 PM] @ Scion Installation LA presents a powerful  look at the vibrancy and creativity of the emerging Brazilian art culture. Curated by Choque Cultural Gallery, the show features the work of eight artists – Calma, Carlos Dias, Ramon Martins, MZK, Silvana Mello, Speto, Titi Freak and Zezão.  As a group, the artists combine pop culture influences (street art, tattoos, hip hop and more) with more traditional art forms. Click through for a sample of work from each artist (photos by Felipe Lopez) to get a better feel for the show.  Don’t miss the opening — this one should be memorable.

Harley-Davidson is rebellious

Looks like with the success of Scion’s Art Installations, other auto companies are getting in the “art” sponsorship game. While technically a motorcycle brand, it looks like Harley Davidson is doing a show in LA.

How rebellious. But at least the show looks like a good lineup of artists.

The Art of Rebellion

Featuring:

Shawn Barber, Christian Clayton, Rob Clayton, Bob Dob, Shepard Fairey, Frank Kozik, Tara McPherson, Alex Pardee, David Trulli, Mark Dean Veca, Oliver Vernon

Seen: Scion Installation 5 in Miami

Jeff Soto

Jeff Soto

The focus of the art world (at least in the United States) is clearly focused on Miami for Art Basel. While people talk about Basel as if it’s one show – the reality is there are numerous satellite fairs and events that collectively make the event much bigger than the actual Art Basel which is hosted at the Miami Convention Center.

On Friday night (12.5), one of the key highlights was the opening of Scion’s Installation 5 tour at the Raleigh Hotel. This is the second stop of this year’s tour which features Self Portraits in the form of paintings and photographs. Dailydujour attended the VIP event prior to the public opening.

As with prior Installation tours, the large group of artists is as diverse aesthetically as it is impressive.  From noted lowbrow painters to urban contemporary artists – the Installation artists present unique and compelling visions.  Quite a few of the top contemporary artists were in attendance including many/most of the Installation artists.

While the focus was on the art in the penthouse at the top of the Raleigh Hotel, the three custom Scions parked outside including one painted by Jeff Soto (above) drew plenty of street-level attention. In particular, the Taco Truck conversion definitely turned quite a few heads and drew plenty of smiles.

Seen: Big Geezers

Curated by The London Police, the Big Geezers group show  succeeded in presenting a high-energy, engaging art opening @ Scion Installation in LA this past Saturday evening.  While the large crowd certainly came from the urban art stylings of the Geezers –  The London Police, Galo, Pez, Morky, Miss Riel, Flying Fortress, Wayne Horse, Abner Preis and Minivila, they stayed for the carnival atmosphere complete with a very popular balloon dart toss (revealing a huge collabo wall mural), Nerf shooting gallery complete with targets created by the artists, and more.

While there were plenty of reasonably priced pieces available for sale (the gallery passes 100% of the purchase price to the artists), this was not your typical art opening.  An onlooker seemed disturbed that the “installations” were “almost too interactive”.  This was Chaz’s vision and he and the other Geezers delivered in spades.

The wall murals that flank the massive Scion space were quite impressive — from the collabo theatrical red/white piece revealed during the balloon toss to the almost indescribable mixed-media extravaganza featuring drawings, painted elements, cereal boxes, and a G ‘n R shirt.

In terms of individual pieces, we’re partial to the four LA-ized Teddy Troops from Flying Fortress.  If you missed the opening, definitely go for the murals — impressive work.  You’ll be gazing at The London Police’s circular tour de force and Galo’s impeccable wall for quite some time.
