Shows: Titus Kaphar @ Roberts and Tilton LA

Titus Kaphar’s first solo exhibition in Los Angeles opens at Roberts & Tilton on September 12th, 2009. Entitled, Reconstruction, Kaphar’s work initiates a contemporary dialogue with history. Kaphar creates these paintings that he then manipulates using modern and contemporary modes of analysis, deconstruction, and reconstruction, to question the original contexts of the figures and re-present history.

Shows: Andrew Schoultz @ Roberts and Tilton

San Francisco-based artist Andrew Schoultz opens his second exhibition at Roberts & Tilton with a series of  chaotic muralistic paintings, but with an ironically subdued and hopeful nature. We really enjoyed Andrew’s work at several galleries in Miami during Art Basel and he recently exhibited at Chelsea Visits Havana, Cuba, and received the 2009 Commission Award from House of Campari. With all of these recent accolades, Schoultz’ show is sure to be a big hit and another big turn-out from all the art lovers in Culver City.

Seen: Kehinde Wiley — The World Stage: Brazil

Roberts and Tilton presented the opening of Kehinde Wiley’s The World Stage: Brazil (O Estágio Do Mundo) this past Saturday (4.4). Dailydujour had the pleasure of attending the opening and shooting the impressive new body of work  which is the  result of Wiley’s residence in Rio de Janeiro. This new solo show is the latest installment in his continuing World Stage series. Rather than celebrating the upper crust – nobility and statesmen heralded and celebrated in sculptures seen throughout the city, Wiley casts his attention towards the everyday black and brown men.   While the work is intertwined with the history of western portraiture, it also is infused with the essence of Brazil most conspiciously in terms of the floral backgrounds based on indigenous fabrics.

While the portraits are beautifully executed with radiant colors, the work excels because it dares to shake the viewer from his or her comfort zone.  The presentation of these perhaps unlikely subjects in grand poses wearing their  American clothing, raises unavoidable questions of expectations, societal norms and the role of increasing globalization.

If you couldn’t make the opening, we’ve got plenty of pictures of the pieces and tonight’s reception.  For those of you fortunate enough to live in SoCal definitely take the opportunity to visit the gallery and view the work in person.  The show runs through May 30th, 2009.

Kehinde Wiley @ Roberts and Tilton (4.4)

This Saturday Roberts & Tilton opens The World Stage: Brazil, the latest offering of Kehinde Wiley’s ambitious World Stage series. Through Wiley’s extensive investigative exchange, the artist’s contemporary yet historical oeuvre accentuates international cultures and their denizens, evoking discourse on an ever-expanding examination of globalization.

During Wiley’s residency in Rio de Janeiro, Afro-Brazilian men became the impetus for the majestic paintings, inspired by the iconic nationalistic sculptures that line the city streets and anchor its parks. Statesmen, noblemen, and the elite of Brazil are erased from their perches; the young black and brown men from present-day favelas are aggrandized. In tandem with the homoerotic undertone, Wiley further challenges the realm of the conventional male gaze. The viewer is forced to confront notions of the inherent colonial influence, exoticism and festishization.

Los Angeles Recommended Openings This Weekend (1.10)

If you want to do the Art Crawl this weekend, there are some very solid shows opening up on Saturday. I would start with a fantastic lineup of galleries in Culver City:

Becca Mann at Roberts and Tilton (pictured above)

Esther Pearl Watson at Billy Shire Fine Arts

Cum* Collective at Kinsey/DesForges and Moira Hahn at Koplin Del Rio (pictured below)

For a map of the Culver City galleries visit here:

If you still want more art, there is always the Downtown Artwalk and then you should stay east and visit Chinatown for Derek Albeck at POV

That should keep you all busy – and if you want daytime art, stop by the photo LA Fair in Santa Monica at the Barker Hanger. Details follow the jump.

Seen: Ed Templeton and Matt Leines @ Roberts and Tilton

Daily D attneded the skater/hipster-fest known as the Ed Templeton opening at Roberts and Tilton. Quite a different crowd than the previous show at the gallery…You know the hipster elite is in attendance when Mark the Cobrasnake is doing coverage.

Matt Leines had a show in the project room, and Templeton’s work filled the front room from nearly floor to ceiling – with photography drawings and a set of huge sculptures. Both Leines and Templeton had a line of kids waiting for signed books and RVCA T-Shirts… More Images + Info »
