Son of Baby Tattooville @ the Riverside Art Museum

Baby Tattooville ‘09 has come and gone with another successful event.  While we managed to do some live blogging from the art retreat, our coverage of other events was delayed – until now.  On Friday evening (10.3),  Attendees and artists made their way to the Riverside Art Museum for a reception for the Son of Baby Tattooville exhibit featuring selected works from this year’s featured Baby Tattooville artists.  Of all of the impressive work on display, Michael Hussar’s series of five spatially arranged pieces depicting partial glimpses of a largely unseen crucifixion loomed large despite the small size of each of the paintings.

Visit: Jeff Soto at the RAM

We went on a little field trip yesterday as I needed to take a break from construction and preparations for the gallery launch. Yoskay, Nate, Edwin, Tessar and I took a drive out to Riverside to visit the town mayor Jeff Soto.

Jeff was kind enough to show us his studio, give us a guided tour of his amazing show at the Riverside Art Museum and then spend a lazy afternoon at lunch with us. I must say that the scale and scope of his new paintings and installation were tremendous. Jeff clearly stepped out on a limb and pushed himself for the show. He told me that it represented nearly a year of painting.

There seems to be some confusion, but even though it is at the museum, the show is all for sale and there are a few great pieces left. Sales are being handled through Kinsey/Desforges so ask them for pricing and details.

The museum has extended the show a few more weeks, so I would recommend stopping in before its gone.

Beyond Baby Tattooville

DSC_9825_500

Saturday night at Baby Tattooville was all about the Beyond Baby Tattooville art show reception at the Riverside Art Museum.  Attendees and participants made the 2-block trek to the show which showcases the work of artists from both years of Baby Tattooville. There was also a special show within a show featuring art for sale from this year’s featured artists. Event attendees had the opportunity to purchase these pieces before the general public.

Beyond Baby Tattooville offers a compelling and fairly broad representation of low brow / post surrealism and is the start of an important collaboration between the annual event and the museum.  Both able bodied and the slightly injured (Tim Biskup was nursing a sore ankle after a slight mishap) unwound after a day full of demos, show and tell, and casual interaction between collectors and artists.    Enjoy our coverage of the show after the jump.
