Seen: Attaboy – “A Touch of Evil”

For his ‘A Touch of Evil’ solo opening this past Saturday (6.13), Artist/Hi-Fructose Co-Founder Attaboy filled POVevolving with an eye-bulging amount of art that seamlessly combines fantastic and futuristic imagery.  We’re glad we caught the opening, albeit at the end of our gallery crawl when most of the crowd had already come and gone.

Perhaps the first thing one notices when entering the gallery are the  large number of enamel on clear acrylic panel pieces.  Done with intricate stencils, these pieces are impressive as they  offer an unusual, floating display of his signature mix of motley and alternatively beautiful characters.  Though we’ve seen Attaboy show these types of pieces before, the large array of panels on display  for this show really amplifies the effect. Strength in numbers, without a doubt.

While all of Attaboy’s work is quite detailed, his colored pencil works on paper are shall we say ‘hyper-detailed’.  If you’ve always admired meticulous and intricate line work, these deserve a closer look.

While his paintings and drawings are immediately recognizable, Attaboy has long created 3D representations of his work in small-run, hand-done resin figures, as well as production vinyl and plush toys.  Several 3D offerings were on tap for A Touch of Evil including his new Goobery designer plush (complete with string-activated sound box) which were ready for the plucking in a Goobery Patch installation in the rear of the gallery.

The show also marked the public debut of Attaboy’s Winged Shmee resin in unpainted prototype form.  Set for a run of eight individually hand-painted pieces, the well-designed figure gives 3D form to the more serene aspects of his art whereas previous resin editions have featured untamed, slightly feral, and definitely unusual characters.

Finally — sculpted in hyper detail by J. Shea, the Brine Queen installation featuring 5 of Attaboy’s creatures independently suspended above the show floor is probably the strongest sculptural translation of his art to-date.  From the large queen to the complimentary pieces, this one-of-a-kind installation drew plenty of looks and attention from show goers.

For the full preview and price list, be sure to check out the gallery’s official A Touch of Evil  show page which runs through July 8th, 2009.

Seen: Movers and Shakers

Johnny 'KMNDZ' Rodriguez

Johnny 'KMNDZ' Rodriguez

Featuring an extremely talented and diverse group of artists, Movers and Shakers opened to packed house on Valentine’s @ POVevolving in LA’s chinatown. If you are even remotely interested in low brow/pop surrealist art, this show has something to offer. In fact, it’s likely that several of your favorite artists have work in the show.   Curator Gino Joukar has drawn widely to provide a broad look at this ‘new’ art genre.  In fact, the diversity speaks to what is at once thrilling and daunting in terms of describing or labeling this art world.

Spanning both the main floor and a previously unused bottom floor, the massive collection of work is anchored by a large mural on panels by Ekundayo and KMNDZ.  The artists are frequent mural collaborators – the familiarity with one another shows itself in the eye-catching results dripping with detail and atmosphere.

In addition to the original art, POV has released a special print box-set featuring  8×10 prints from thirteen artists including : Ana Bagayan, Andy Kehoe, Bob Dob, Brian Despain,  Cathie Bleck, Damon Soule, Glenn Barr,  Johnny ‘KMNDZ’ Rodriguez, Mia, Lola, Naotto Hatori, Nicoletta Ceccoli, and Yosuke Ueno.

If you missed the opening, Movers and Shakers is definitely worth a prolonged visit.

Derek Albeck – It’s Just a Ride

LA artist Derek Albeck took viewers for a spin with It’s Just a Ride which opened this past Saturday (1.10) @ POVevolving in Chinatown.  The new work is in large part a reaction the turbulent times we find ourselves in. Working exclusively in graphite and colored pencil, Derek presents finely detailed explorations of  human experience presented through visual patterns, particularly kaleidoscopic. Several of the pieces has a contrasting dual – the point perhaps being that the ride has twists and turns, some positive, some not.  Or perhaps the contrasting pieces draws our attention to differing points of view.  One such pair, the  skull pieces — Put on a Crazy Face and Put on a Happy Face, showcases Albeck’s considerable skill,  used here to create highly realistic yet evocative facial expressions.

Preview: Amy Casey @ POVevolving (11.15)

Two Cities. Amy Casey.

Two Cities. Amy Casey.

POVevolving Gallery has just released a set of selected preview paintings for Amy Casey’s upcoming show which opens on November 15th.  After our previous post featuring a glimpse at some of her prior work, we’re pleased with this  early glimpse at the Cleveland area painter’s new work.  Through striking imagery, the paintings  depict neighborhoods at risk and in turmoil, both literally and symbolically.Houses dangle precariously by threads.  Roads undulate wildly. Safety cones spill uncontrollably into the world.   Casey’s paintings cause us to reflect on the ephemeral nature of safety and the importance of vigilance and resolve.

Amy Casey – New Paintings (11.15)

Climb. Amy Casey. 44 x 44".

Climb. Amy Casey. 44 x 44".

Cleveland painter Amy Casey will present new paintings for her solo opening on November 15 @ the POVevolving gallery in LA’s China Town District.  Casey’s recent work features topsy-turvy urban landscapes with serpentine roads, houses on stilts or swinging from precariously thin cables.  As she reveals in her official artist statement, this work is motivated in part by a recurring apocalyptic dream.  Her paintings symbolize communal and personal mechanisms of coping with adversity and disasters both natural and unnatural.  They are works of resilience rather than despair and acquiescence.

In looking at her body of work posted on her web site, it strikes us that her work succeeds on both a surface visual level by presenting strange yet familiar lands rendered skillfully and on a symbolic level that is likely to resonate with most viewers — home is a powerful concept that colors many aspects of our lives.  Interestingly and perhaps purely coincidentally, the almost alien-like plant life found in her earlier works has all but vanished in her pieces done in 2008.

As we await preview pictures from the show, we’ve selected some pieces from Amy Casey’s previous work for your enjoyment.  Some were sent by the gallery and others come from her web site which we encourage you to explore — very well done.

Derek Albeck – Last Gasp Prints

lrg_Albeck_POVeditions_Web

Derek Albeck has just released prints of his Last Gasp piece through POVevolving.  The images is part of a series of kaleidoscope style drawings and serigraphs Derek has been working on for the last several months.  This particular piece  was created while he was encountering a gamut of new emotions and finding ways to cope with them.  It’s available in three sizes with varying edition sizes and pricing.

If you’re not familiar with Derek’s work yet, his work features finely detailed lines, increasing use of patterns, and lately is mostly black and white.  It’s urban yet highly stylized.

Look for a solo show from Derek Albeck at POVevolving gallery this January.
