Michelle and Lou Romano

Hello folks. I’m blogging. I’m always two steps behind everyone else where technology is involved. So here we go.  Went to Nucleus on Saturday to check out those Pixar peeps and their neat books they keep putting out. Everything was super cute and the East Side is where its at.

Lou is one of my modern day heroes. Can’t get enough. All those dudes rock. If you haven’t been, you should really make the trek to Alhambra. I can totally give food recommendations. Thanks for reading!

Seen: Kid Koala’s “Music to Draw to…” in LA

We usually focus on viewing, appreciating and collecting art.  So it’s a welcome change to talk about an event that encourages people to create art in whatever fashion they see fit. Talented DJ and illustrator Kid Koala took his “Music to Draw to…” concept on the road with the first LA session this past Sunday evening @ Nucleus.  While Koala is known for rousing sets, he can also lay down slower ambient music perfect for unleashing creativity.  The response for the event was strong, whether it was drawing, knitting, or working on the computer people seemed to really enjoy working in the relaxing environment.  We spotted a few familiar faces in among the crowd including  Jim Mahfood and Luke Chueh.   Missed it?  It sounds like the guys at Nerdcore who co-presented this session are thinking about making “Music to Draw to…” a regular event.

Kid Koala – Quiet/Loud in LA (4.26 & 4.27)

Based in Montreal, DJ and artist Kid Koala is taking his popular “Music to draw to…” events on the road for his mini Quiet/ Loud tour.  The first stop hits LA starting tomorrow – Sunday, with “Music to draw to…” @ Gallery Nucleus from 5 to 10 PM.  The $5 admission fee gets you a cup of hot chocolate and a pencil.  Relax, and let your creativity unfold with the live tunes from Kid Koala.  This is the ‘quiet’ portion of the tour, draw, chill out, but save the dancing for Monday.

On Monday, come to the Bordello Bar (starting at 9 PM) for “Get up! Get down!” featuring Kid Koala spinning mixes live on four turntables.  Cover is $10.  Both events are presented by Nerdcore.

Seen: Line Weight

Nucleus presented the opening of Line Weight this past Saturday evening. The show highlighted the art of drawing and specifically line work with a selection of new drawings by Luke Chueh, Mari Inukai, James Jean (above), David Jien, Richard Kirk, Ronald Kurniawan, Moki, Christine Nguyen, Jaime Zollars, and Vania Zouravliov.

Many were likely drawn to the opening by the work of James Jean and Luke Chueh who certainly did not disappoint – each turned in two excellent pieces sure to be loved by their fans and collectors. While perhaps not a marquee name (yet), David Jien’s large body of highly-detailed graphite works proved to be quite popular with the crowd. While the subjects varied from pop (Japanese Giant Robots) to rural landscapes punctuated by lettering rendered as shapes (often in the form of what at first appear to be logs or beams), the use of fine points and lines was consistent throughout. While David is a talented painter, he’s currently focusing on graphite as his medium of choice as he wraps up his degree at Art Center.

Line Weight is a strong show featuring several excellent pieces. If you’re after form and intricate detail, it’s worth a look.
