Seen: Year of the Ox

Giant Robot 2 in Los Angeles opened their Year of the Ox group show, celebrating this year’s Chinese zodiac animal.  Overall the large and well-curated show  offered strong and varied pieces – paintings, drawings and a few sculptures.  The show roster  includes Bigfoot, Deth P. Sun, Amanda Visell, Luke Chueh, Michelle Valigura, David Horvath, Edwin Ushiro, Buff Monster, Joel Nakamura, Le Merde and many more. While  Paul Bunyan themed pieces proved somewhat popular,  artists’ interpretations of the theme were quite diverse overall.  Year of the Ox offers many affordable pieces with a wide appeal. Check it out and plan to spend quite awhile to take in all the art. The show closes on April 15th.

Switcheroo Studios

Dropped in on artists Amanda Visell and Michelle Valigura this week to check out their new digs. The pair just moved to a new office and studio for their Switcheroo line of products. Amanda was working on her new painting for the DailyduJour curated show in Barcelona this weekend and Michelle was working on a series of new sculpts.

It is always fun to see the behind the scenes of an artist workshop…

I had to pick up one of these great metal owls…and then got sent home with a killer gift bag of plush. The two have big plans on the horizin, so stay tuned. You can also keep up with Amanda on her blog here on the DD.

Seen: Michelle Valigura’s Creation Mutation

Michelle Valigura opened Creation Mutation, her first solo, on October 25th @ M Modern in Palm Springs.   As the show’s title suggests, Michelle presented a menagerie of mutated animals (and one siamese barbershop duo) done as wood sculpture. From the large tiger to the alligator, the whimsical pieces proved to be irresistible  with the majority of the pieces selling via preview and during the opening night. While the show officially closes today, contact the gallery for availability about a few remaining pieces.
