Update: Melissa Haslam

Melissa Haslam is gearing up for 2010 and just sent me a study of some new work she is developing for her busy schedule next year. I can’t share the other images, but I will tell you that Haslam has clearly been putting some hours in at the easel…refining her technique while working towards a photo-realistic style.

We should finally see some finished work from her this April for our SF exhibition and than in shows in LA and London. You can expect a new print from her to release early January on Paper Tiger as well.

Seen: Bipolar @ Exhibit A

Bipolar

Bipolar

After Mike Shinoda’s show at JANM we swung over to Tony Alva’s Exhibit A Gallery to see a group show that included work from Tim Biskup, Sas Christian and our own Nate Frizzell and Melissa Haslam.

The gallery has a raucous crowd out back waiting to hear the band play. Not sure of their name, but it was like a young Motley Crue…circa Shout at the Devil era. We spent some time in the offices/vip area as the band teased their hair and put on makeup.

As for the artwork it was certainly an interesting show as artists were asked to do work unlike their usual style. One would hardly recognize most of the work.

Gallery News

Couple gallery updates to share…

Wednesday, May 27th from 7-10pm we will be hosting both the closing party for Yoskay Yamamoto and Melissa Haslam’s shows, while also releasing the new gallery Koibito from Yoskay and Munky King. Lots of things for Yamamoto fans to pick up at the party from postcard sets, our first exhibition catalog, a new print and some other surprises for those who join us.

The busy week continues on Saturday May 30th for the Annual Culver City Artwalk where we will be showcasing work from gallery represented artists as well as artists we will have coming up in the near future. We have some excellent new work from our usual suspects, plus work from Alexandros Vasmoulakis, Thomas Doyle, Joe Black, Morgan Slade and several others new to the gallery. Make sure to come visit with the masses that will be descending on Culver City.

Seen: Melissa Haslam – Wild Fields

Australian artist Melissa Haslam opened her largest solo-to-date, Wild Fields, this evening (5.9) in the project space @ LeBasse Projects in Culver City. While she has previously focused primarily on black and white pieces, color is increasingly part of the equation for the portraits of her lovely ladies. Check the gallery site for available pieces.

Goodbye and Hello

We are getting ready for Yoskay Yamamoto and Melissa Haslam’s opening this Saturday. All the work is on its way to the gallery after getting framed and prepped for us. Yoskay is in house building in a “chandelier” of cranes and sculpted teardrops.

Melissa is off exploring Hollywood, and we just hope she can make it back in one piece.

See you all this Saturday. Gallery site for more details.

Seen: Audrey Kawasaki in Melbourne

One of our new gallery artists, Melissa Haslam happens to live in Melbourne. Last night happened to be Audrey Kawasaki’s first Australian show. Melissa reports for us:

Audrey Kawasaki’s first Australian exhibition “Overlap” opened tonight at Outré Gallery in Melbourne, and in true Outré tradition the door-list-only policy didn’t stop the gallery from becoming crowded with fans, collectors, and people off the street who managed to talk their way past the door-staff.

The much-anticipated show featured one original painting and a selection of limited edition artist proof prints. The show sold out to local collectors before the official opening, a testament to Kawasaki’s ever-growing popularity in Australia and a nice precursor to a much larger exhibition scheduled for Melbourne in 2010.

Gearing up // Art Basel Miami

So after a great show with Nate Frizzell and Scott Belcastro, we are now gearing up for our first art fair at the Aqua Hotel in Miami. The fair is one of several high profile satellite fairs based around the Art Basel Miami. I am getting very nervous and excited about the upcoming fair, as we went last year but just as party-goers.

This year we are shipping tons of new work for out booth and will hopefully be introducing some new collectors to work by some of our repped artists.

We have some huge new pieces by Alexandros Vasmoulakis as well as new work from Melissa Haslam, Yoskay Yamamoto and even new pieces from Blaine Fontana. If you happen to be in Miami, I hope you can join us. If you are going to be in town and want to come, shoot me an email as we have a few more VIP passes to the fair.

Seen : Blender

Mari Inukai

Mari Inukai

Cerasoli : LeBasse hosted the opening of Blender, its first show since the merger, last night (10.11). The group show featured the work of Melissa Haslam, Vincent Hui, Mari Inukai (above), Ryuichi Ogino (Ogi), Deth P Sun, Jennifer Davis and Suzanne Sattler. Additionally, Ogi presented a mixed-media wall installatioin featuring drawings, and hand-made clay figures.

The show offered a good a variety of work on display.  Melissa Haslam’s paintings proved to be extremely popular – all her piece were red dotted.  Suazanne Sattler’s pencil drawings are quite detailed and reward up close viewing with unexpected and slightly gruesome details (an animal being deconstructed layer by layer as an example). Finally, fans of Deth P. Sun need to check out his newest work – it’s bigger and more rendered than ever before while still retaining the quirky quality he’s known for.

Blender was a nice beginning to what we hope  will be a long string of success at Cerasoli: LeBasse. Be sure to click through for more pics of opening night.
