Preview: City of Fire presented by Arrested Motion (6.5)


Our friends over at Arrested Motion will present their  City of Fire group show @ Stephen Webster in Beverly Hill on Tuesday, June 5th.   The exhibition’s title alludes to the passion integral to a burgeoning career of meaningful, well-received artistic expression as showcased in the work of  Cyrcle, Thomas Doyle, Ron English, James Jean, Kid Zoom, Dave Kinsey, Mars-1, Patrick Martinez, Pedro Matos, REVOK, Rostarr, SABER, Andrew Schoultz, Jeff Soto, Judith Supine, TrustoCorp, Mark Dean Veca, Nick Walker, and Adam Wallacavage.

Further Book Signing @ SFMOMA (5.6)


If you find yourself in the Bay Area this Thursday, May 6, visit San Francisco’s Museum of Modern Art for a free public signing of the collaborative art book Further. Featuring seven artists (Damon Soule, David Choong Lee, MARS-1, Nome Edonna, Oliver Vernon, Robert Hardgrave, and Tomokazu Matsuyama), Further explores the symbiotic relationships between works inspired by Surrealism and the technological future. All artists will be signing.

Seen: David B Smith’s Group Exhibition Part 2

While LA was breaking out some amazing shows last Friday, The David B Smith Gallery in Denver, Co exhibited an incredible group show from long standing artists, (Kris Lewis, Shag, Jason Thielke, etc) as well as some unexpected ones (MARS-1, Amy Sol, Jud Bergeron, etc).  Pics after the jump.

Shows: Further @ Joshua Liner NY

This Saturday, Joshua Liner Gallery opens a group exhibition featuring works by artists Damon Soule, David Choong Lee, MARS-1, Nome Edonna, Oliver Vernon, Robert Hardgrave, and Tomokazu Matsuyama. The exhibition coincides with the release of Further, a new book that brings together the seven artists and their varied takes on contemporary abstraction, mysticism, futurism, and surrealism.

“Further” is the third in a series of books the artists have published over the past few years – releasing a new volume every two years or so. Expect to see book launches/shows in SF and LA later this year.

Seen: MARS-1 @ Billy Shire Fine Arts

SF artist MARS-1 was part of a four person group show @ Billy Shire Fine arts which opened tonight (5.9).  He presented four amazing paintings featuring his abstract other worldly scenes  which defy easy description.  Definitely a treat to see in person.  He also offered three of his limited-edition Smokestack resins (ed. of 30).

Recommended LA Openings for May 9th

Some fun shows and events roll into LA this weekend. Brazilian Joao Ruas opens in east LA as the resident illustrator for Fables, while burgeoning star Japanese artist Yoskay Yamamoto (pictured) opens in Culver City. Both shows should be seen in person to appreciate how talented these guys are. Plus, all the way west in Santa Monica is Travis Louie showcasing his amazing fantasy portraits.
