Swanky, modern, hip and cool.  This is the world that Shag (Josh Agle) portrays and in fact creates through his paintings.  Here’s a sneak preview of his next solo, the Last Days of Magic opening on Friday, February 13th (8PM to Midnight) @ M Modern in Palm Springs.

Shag + The Abstraction Distraction II @ M Modern (2.13)

M Modern will have the desert fired up for a strong double-header opening on Friday February 13th [8 PM – Midnight] with Shag’s The Last Day of Magic and The Abstraction Distraction II group show curated by Detroit based Glenn Barr. Shag (Josh Agle) opens his third solo show in the desert with a dozen new paintings revolving around ‘magic’.  In addition to the original paintings, the gallery will also offer artist proofs of several sold-out print edtions including 6 featuring a Palm Springs theme.

In addition to Shag’s new solo, the evening will also feature the opening of The Abstraction Distraction II, a followup to last year’s show which challenges artists to work abstractly instead of relying on their figurative style comfort zone.  This year’s edition features the work of  Glenn Barr, Tim Biskup, Amanda Visell, Chris Reccardi, Lynne Naylor, Beth Wilusz, Buffmonster, Robert Pokorny, Dale Sizer, Bosko, Roger Webb, John Bell and Chris Trueman.

Seen: Michelle Valigura’s Creation Mutation

Michelle Valigura opened Creation Mutation, her first solo, on October 25th @ M Modern in Palm Springs.   As the show’s title suggests, Michelle presented a menagerie of mutated animals (and one siamese barbershop duo) done as wood sculpture. From the large tiger to the alligator, the whimsical pieces proved to be irresistible  with the majority of the pieces selling via preview and during the opening night. While the show officially closes today, contact the gallery for availability about a few remaining pieces.

Seen: Joe Ledbetter – Hunters and Gatherers

Joe Ledbetter presented the eternal struggle of life and death with his own addictive cartoon influenced aesthetic for the opening of his Hunters and Gatherers solo last night (10.25) @ M Modern in Palm Springs.  The show featured a large new collection of original paintings as well several limited-edition prints which we believe have been offered previously.

Perhaps the piece getting the most attention was Detached which features a severed Bunny head over the actual mixing palette used for the show.  The heavily textured piece with the abstract background works well and definitely stands apart from the other pieces in the show and from Joe’s prior work.

Additionally, Joe has recently started to focus on the use of subtle lighting and delicate shadows to bring a stronger sense of atmosphere to his work.  The reflective Be Happy is a good example of this technique.

Finally, perhaps our favorite piece is the longing Three Wolves – powerful sentiment. Howling at the moon hasn’t looked so good in quite a while.
