Seen: Hyperbolic Crochet Coral Reef @ Track 16

The Hyperbolic Crochet Coral Reef exhibit which opened this past Saturday @ Track 16 is an unusual and compelling mix of art activism,  intricate crochet, the mathematics behind hyperbolic spaces,   The exhibit is a collective effort organized by the Institute for Figuring to draw attention to the ecological crisis featuring the Earth’s ocean reefs, most notably the Great Barrier Reef.  Drawing upon the mathematics of Hyperbolic spaces which describe the seemingly limitless variation of coral life forms and a technique to represent hyperbolic spaces through Crochet, the Insititue has worked with numerous artists to create vast yarn Coral Reefs.

What began in the homes of  curators  Margaret Wertheim and Christine Wertheim, co-founders of the IFF, has spawned numerous collectives around the world working to create hyperbolic crochet Coral Reefs.   This exhibit  is the first time the separate yet aligned efforts have been brought under roof. It runs through Saturday, February 21st 2009.
