bear with me.

it has been a week since the opening of everything we wanted, in our nostalgic future, and i have been playing catch-up all week. sorry if i have not reached out to say thanks or responded to emails- i will try to get them out as soon as i can.

thanks to those who did their best to tell their friends about the show. thanks to the bloggers, tweeters, emailers, facebookers- etc. the support i received coming up to the show, that night and post-show has been unexpected and positively overwhelming.

you can find photos of the night here, and here. thanks to my pops antonius lo, simon cole, and richard ho for documenting the night. if you have pictures and would like to send them to me, i’d be very happy to add it to the flickr page, with your credits, of course.

if you so happened to miss it, i also had a short interview about the show on erratic phenomena. it was great hanging out with you, amanda :) .

a very special thank you to my collectors and patrons, you are helping me continue in my calling. i am lucky to be able to share my work with you.
there are still a few elephant sculpts, prints and catalogues left at the gallery. please get in touch with simon for yours.

finally, happy early valentine’s day and chinese new year, (they fall on the same day this year) it is the year of the tiger- give your chinese friend a valentine’s card with a quote like, “your love makes me roar.” or “how fierce is this romance?” :)

working together.

i have been really lucky the last few days to have had the chance to interact with so many creative people. on sunday, rosena fung, nimit malavia and myself, (aka the zachary quinto trio) had a bit of a comic and drawing jam; you can see some of the comics over at rosena’s flickr.

yesterday, martha chan, erika danusasmita and nimit all graced me with their presence and we collaborated on some paintings and small drawings that will be part of my installation at my solo show in february.

here are some images to whet your appetite, but more can be found here, on my flickr.

Shows: The Museum of Historical Makeovers | Kathy Aoki at Swarm Gallery

Kathy Aoki, Solar-plate etching

Kathy Aoki, The Brazilian (2009), Solar-plate etching

Kathy Aoki jumped gears to create the “Museum of Historical Makeovers” show at Swarm gallery. She’s leaving behind the trappings of her past cartoon styled narratives favored for several years. Instead, Aoki takes on the aesthetics of historical illustration and ancient artifacts, while preserving her favorite themes of gender, beauty and cute culture consumerism.

Creating a pseudo-museum experience, Aoki presents us with imagery that looks antique, but addresses current beauty and pop culture concepts. In this museum, which is based in 3011, there are two galleries that present archeological finds from the early 21st Century. Gallery One presents remnants from the reign of pop culture icon Gwen Stefani. Excavated from the Los Angeles area (now underwater), the archives include a personal Cartouche for the singer, Canopic jars representing her clothing line, her ex-fiance and band member Tony Kanal, and her music. Also on display is a flash drive that contains an antiquated sketch for Stefani’s Harujuku Lovers perfume line. The artist-created file actually exists on the flash drive, which is sold as a print-out with the piece (see image below).

Seen: Know Hope @ Carmichael Gallery

Israeli artist Know Hope opened his ‘the times won’t save you (this rain smells of memory)’ solo at Carmichael Gallery on Thursday Evening (6.4).  The centerpiece of the show was his large site-specific installation featuring  several of his signature characters admist a cardboard box cityscape coping with a downpour of tears from birds overhead. The overall effect was dramatic with the large number of suspended tears and the decision to not directly light the installation which increased the somber mood.

Accompanying the installation were  several smaller pieces including a couple of excellent diorama style pieces featuring cut-out cardboard elements – almost mini installations on a wall if you will.  These were the standouts of his show since the emphasize the relationship among characters and elements that is the backbone of the art.

Next up for Know Hope, an installation in NYC.  Enjoy our photos of the opening and an informal video of some of Know Hope’s work.

Sneak Peek: Know Hope’s Installation @ Carmichael Gallery (6.4)

Here’s a first look at  Know Hope’s ambitious installation project for his ‘the times won’t save you (this rain smells of memory)’ solo opening next Thursday, June 4th (7-10 PM) @ Carmichael Gallery.   We’re really curious to see what form the massive number of elements take – 30,000 paper raindrops. 40,000 feet of fishing twine. 2,500 fishing weights and more.

A Closer Look: Tim Biskup’s Mystic Temple of Self Entitlement

Tim Biskup and the Mystic Temple of Self Entitlement. Photo by Nytha.

It’s been a week (5.13) since  Tim Biskup thrilled Rome with his Mystic Temple of Self-Entitlement live-performance installation at the Dorothy Circus gallery.  The installation features five wooden temples designed by Biskup – one for each of the four elements and one for humanity (in the form of his signature Helper character).

The performance ?  Biskup used a catapult he designed to launch rubber balls at his wooden installation, destroying it while the audience cheered him on.  Here’s a look at the Mystic Temple of Self-Entitlement via a short and sweet video courtesy of the gallery and a nice action shot by Nytha from her Flickr photostream.

Seen: Augor @ Upper Playground LA

Last night (5.14),  Upper Playground offered the LA Downtown Art Walk crowd a heavy dose of Augor. The well-respected graff writer  presented a site-specific installation  and retrospective in the LA store’s gallery space.

Augor made the space his own – presenting three sculptures built from found objects including a ‘bed’ of spent spray cans as well as a selection of his art work done over the years.  The ‘feel” is just right — the once white-walled gallery is now a gritty space complete with walls coated in  heavy layers of brown paint applied seemingly effortlessly with a pronounced  drippy texture.  There’s alot packed into this relatively tight space — including a tagged newspaper machine flanked by a sweet organic paper sculpture.   We have plenty of pics after the jump, but as always it’s best seen in person — so GO.

incidental taxture pt. 2, ay.

some of you may remember my first incidental taxture project.

i loved the project so much that i am attempting to make it a series of sorts. i had started incidental taxture part two a while back, but had only been able to finish it up recently.

this one is actually longer than the first, and seeing how small the first one was to view, i had to reconsider presentation. i’ve decided for this time around, to post per three pages per day. i don’t know exactly how i’m going to ultimately present the entire image, but if you’re interested in seeing that- i’m open to suggestions on how to go about doing it.

so it begins:

see you tomorrow.
