Munky Bidness @ SDCC 09

After the sun goes down, comic-con turns from a packed exhibition hall and line upon line waiting for sought-after collectibles to parties and plenty of them. This past Thursday,   Munky King continued its annual and much welcomed SDCC party at Bar Basic  along with co-presenter Hi-Fructose.

Looking to add a pulse-quickening jolt to the live art portion of the party, both Jim Mahfood and Buff Monster painted on female models with strategically placed tape x’s.  In the main painting area, Carlos Ramos, Attaboy and Chris Ryniak created original paintings on the fly – strong and diverse results.

A wave of artists and industry folks filtered in through the evening including Simone Legno, Angry Woebots, Yoskay Yamamoto, kaNO, Diego Marchioni, Jim Crawford, Emi Uchiki, Jesse Hernandez, Marka27 to mention a few.

Shows: Victor Castillo @ Merry Karnowsky LA

Merry Karnowsky Gallery is proud to present Gameland, a solo exhibition by Barcelona-based Chilean artist, Victor Castillo. In his latest paintings and drawings, Castillo illustrates an impressive balance between the conflicting extremes of juvenile innocence and macabre violence.

In his first Los Angeles exhibition, Castillo’s deftly painted subjects are usually children wearing eerie white masks that bring to mind classic horror films and childhood nightmares. The children interact with animals and each other in a surreal and sinister cartoon world where toys become weapons, and brutality is gleeful.  They are often painted against rich black backgrounds, lit only by the flames below them, or at an ambiguous dusk/dawn before baroque landscapes.

JULY 11 – AUGUST 8, 2009
Opening Reception: Saturday, July 11, 8-11pm
Gallery Hours: Tuesday – Saturday 12 – 6pm

Shows: Attaboy @ POV Evolving in LA

Daniel Seifert, better known as Attaboy, presents his first solo show in two years at POV Evolving Gallery in Chinatown. Atta presents an onslaught of meticulously handcut shadow casting spray varnish stenciled plastic pieces, elaborate “exploded view” drawings, and a Gooberry Patch in the back room, where visitors can pick an unripened talking pull string Gooberry Plush and take one home to abuse. After 5 years of waiting, they’ve finally arrived, and they’re still not ripe.
The show is being sponsored by Hi-Fructose Magazine and Gelaskins. Atta tells us that if you come out to the show early enough you will be able to snag some iphone, ipod and laptop skins of his recent work. We always like freebies.

Atta has a great interview on HiFructose as well here.

Opening reception: Saturday June 13th from 6 – 10 pm.

Seen: Hi-Fructose’s Overdose @ Copro Gallery

Kris Kuksi and Greg Simkins

Kris Kuksi and Greg Simkins

This past Saturday evening, Hi-Fructose magazine presented their third annual group show, Overdose, at Copro Gallery in Santa Monica. Dailydujour had the pleasure of taking in the opening – here’s our belated show coverage including plenty of photos.  Offering a vivid and broad overview of low brow, pop surrealist, and new contemporary art the show featured some of the most exciting talents working today including Greg ‘Craola’ Simkins (above), KMNDZ, Chris Berens, Kris Kuksi (above),  Josh Keyes,  Yosuke Ueno, Naoto Hattori, Yoskay Yamamoto, Eric Fortune, Bob Dob, and more.

The evening also served as a release party/signing for the Hi-Fructose Collected Edition box set which includes 5 art prints.  Several artists were on-hand to sign for collectors including Brandi Milne, Greg Simkins, Joe Ledbetter, and photographer extradordinaire Brian McCarty.

Overdose runs through April 25th – if you can check it out in person, if not there’s always the complete online preview.

Hi-Fructose’s Overdose (4.4)

In Numb and Callus. KMNDZ.

In Numb and Callus. KMNDZ.

Hi-Fructose has really outdone themselves for this year’s annual show.  Overdose opening this Saturday, April 4th 2009 [8 - 11:30 PM] @ Copro Nason in Santa Monica offers a broad selection of lowbrow/pop surrealist artists.  Despite being an extremely large group show, the pieces are extremely strong examples of the artists’ work — not an easy curatorial feat by any means.    We’ve picked just a few of our favorites from the gallery’s web preview including KMNDZ’s amazing “In Numb and Callus” (above)  to showcase here but the entire show is impressive. We’re also really excited about the opportunity  to see one of Kris Kuksi’s beyond words sculptures close up.

Apparently, limited-quantities of the Hi-Fructose Collected Edition box sets will be available at the opening and several of the featured artists will be on-hand for a signing. Additionally, Hi-Fructose 11 featuring a cover story on Mark Ryden will debut at the show prior to its coming newstand release. And if that’s not enough (some people are hard to please…) –  Hi-Fructose will be giving away a free mystery poster, available only during the opening.   Anyway you slice it,  a must- see show.
