Shows: Stephen G. Rhodes @ Hammer

0

Currently on view at Westwood’s Hammer Museum is a solo exhibition from Los Angeles-based Stephen G. Rhodes.

Rhodes, renowned for his multimedia installations’ dramatization of the historical unconscious, presents a film inspired by Steve Allen’s late-1970s talk show “Meeting of Minds,” a fictionalized depiction of roundtable discussions among such historical figures as Plato, Cleopatra, Karl Marx, and Charles Darwin. In it, Rhodes combines narrative uncertainty with citations and various media to challenge the viewer’s understanding of the “fact” seemingly inherent in historical representation.

This Friday, Westwood’s Hammer Museum welcomes Paris-based artist Eric Baudelaire’s first solo show in the U.S. Baudelaire will present his video Sugar Water, a depiction of a sequence of billposter images of a combusting car. The portrayal progresses gradually, over a 72-minute period, suggesting a slow contemplation of political violence in opposition to the rapid-fire, visual nature of news media and its effect on the consumer.
