Colin Christian

A decade long tradition in Detroit, The Dirty Show opened its first exhibition in LA on Friday at the City Center Motel in Downtown LA.  Featuring a vide variety of erotic art, the exhibition celebrates and questions the nature and varieties of desire.  This is art stripped down in a decaying motel devoid of the bright lights and pristine walls of traditional galleries.  Curated by Jerry Vile , the large group show features several well-known artists including HR Giger, Colin Christian (above), Tristan Eaton, Glenn Barr, and Brian Viveros. In addition to the art exhibit, several Suicide Girl modes added undeniable spice to the evening.  The carefully selected pictures after the jump while arguably tasteful, are definitely not work safe.  The two day show ends tonight (11.14).

The Dirty Show showcasing a wide range of erotic art hits Los Angeles this weekend with a two-day motel take-over show at the City Center Motel in downtown starting on Friday the 13th and running through Saturday the 14th (7-11 PM both nights). While the Dirty Show is an annual tradition in Detroit, we believe this is the first time its made its way to the City of Angels.  The large group show features numerous artists spanning multiple mediums – painting, sculpture, photography and more: Clive Barker, HR Giger, Eric Kroll, Glenn Barr, Colin Christian, Tristan Eaton, Brian Viveros,  Niagara, The Pizz, Ken Keirns and more.

As you might expect given the theme, this is 18+ and over, i.d.’s will be checked. There’s a $10 minimum donation at the door (excess funds will be donated to cancer research) and cameras are not allowed.

Back in October we posted an early look at the sculpt for Glenn Barr’s Happiness Bronze Sculpture.  So we’re happy to hear that the piece is done and ready for purchase.  Standing 11” high, the Happiness Bronze sculpted by Dave Grazzo and produced by Andevan Bronze Works is limited to just 15 pieces.  Impressive – definitely captures the dark urban fantasy vibe of the  original painting on which its based. M Modern will host the Pussycats, Dolls & Vixens group show with an opening on April 25th, 2009 [7-9:30 PM] in Palm Springs.  The show is a tribute to late sexploitation film director Russ Meyer and features new original work from Shag, Glenn Barr, the Pizz (above), Travis Lampe, Bwana Spoons, Joey Remmers and more. It’ll be interesting to see how the artists interpret Meyer’s over-the-top style featuring extremely well-endowed female leads.  Adding to the event,  Kitten Natividad and other women from Meyer’s films will be making a special appearance at the opening.

M Modern will have the desert fired up for a strong double-header opening on Friday February 13th [8 PM – Midnight] with Shag’s The Last Day of Magic and The Abstraction Distraction II group show curated by Detroit based Glenn Barr. Shag (Josh Agle) opens his third solo show in the desert with a dozen new paintings revolving around ‘magic’.  In addition to the original paintings, the gallery will also offer artist proofs of several sold-out print edtions including 6 featuring a Palm Springs theme.

In addition to Shag’s new solo, the evening will also feature the opening of The Abstraction Distraction II, a followup to last year’s show which challenges artists to work abstractly instead of relying on their figurative style comfort zone.  This year’s edition features the work of  Glenn Barr, Tim Biskup, Amanda Visell, Chris Reccardi, Lynne Naylor, Beth Wilusz, Buffmonster, Robert Pokorny, Dale Sizer, Bosko, Roger Webb, John Bell and Chris Trueman.

Detroit artist Glenn Barr is working on his first bronze sculpture, “Happiness”, based on his painting of the same name.  The piece is limited to 15 pieces and is being sculpted by Dave Grasso. The work-in-progress sculpt is already looking great and very true to the original art.  Happiness is an excellent choice to present as sculpture  given all the 3D elements present. Here’s a quick update on the collaborative Art Jam piece from Baby Tattooville.  These are shots of a morning work session featuring the duo of Dave Cooper and Bob Dob.  Look for  more updates on the progress and transformation of this piece as we head to completion this evening.  Pop Cling will take the finished piece and turn it around into prints for distribution tomorrow morning.
