Shows: Diplopia @ Giant Robot 2

Picture 5

This weekend, Los Angeles’ Giant Robot 2 introduces its first 2010 show with joint exhibition Diplopia. Running from January 16 to February 10, 2010, Diplopia features the work of emerging artists Eleanor Davis and Katherine Guillen.

Eleanor Davis is a cartoonist who makes work for both adults and children. The award-winning Atlanta, Georgia-based artist grew up on children’s comics, entered the Sequential Arts program at the Savannah College of Art and Design, and makes painstakingly crafted, whimsical, and non-condescending comics for young readers. Her most recent studio artwork involves pen and ink with watercolor with some gouache. Like the panels of her stories, it is bold yet full of mystery, with recurring themes that include “humanity in the face of destruction, people laughing and crying, etc.”

Los Angeles-based artist Katherine Guillen creates paintings and prints that explore the tenuous connections between the urban and natural environments. Her most recent work–which resembles landscapes but is more symbolic than picturesque–investigates the way structures work as language on the landscape and how we use architecture to order nature and defy mortality. She says, “I am fascinated by the human desire to create, build, and idealize, which is both our redemption and our failing.” In addition to making gouache and mixed media paintings on paper, she will be showing some papier-mache pieces.

For this show, the longtime friends are also creating a number of large collaborative panels.

Seen: Post-It Show 4

5-DSC_4120

Last Saturday, Giant Robot hosted their fourth annual Post-it Show, featuring a dizzying number of tiny original art pieces on you guessed it, post-its.  With a deep and talented artist roster curated by Mark Todd and Esther Pearl Watson and prices starting at just $20 for the standard sized post-it, the cash and carry show proved quite popular.  Holiday shopping at its finest – affordable and unique.   Enjoy our pics of the opening.  Be careful though, you’ll catch yourself staring at the pieces, and then are hundreds.

Shows: Jack Long @ Giant Robot, New York

We cannot wait to see Jack Long’s new paintings in Singing Her to Sleep at Giant Robot, New York on Saturday, June 27th.

Long’s mythical scenarios meticulously depict mysterious themes that celebrate the events of everyday life, love, and nature. Jack has been showing ever since working with Giant Robot and now he is taking over the New York outpost for another solo show. While he normally works on a fairly small scale we are hearing that some pieces for this show will be much larger. Lucky for us we will be in town for this one, so cannot wait to see more.

David Choe and Friends @ GR NY

Last Saturday I attended David Choe’s Choegal release event and signing at Giant Robot NY. It was great to see David again after running into him at the SCION Installation Five art tour during Art Basel Miami Beach. He was excited about his upcoming show in China later this year and new book coming out in 2010. Before walking away with signed Choe collectibles, I met up with friend Lis Timpone who has three new works in an international group show at Ad Hoc Art called Delineations (a collection of drawings and illustrations) opening Friday, January 16th, 7-10pm. Lis introduced me to her friend, artist Mollie Goldstrom, who is showing work in Adolescent Rage Closed Caption Comics at Cinders Gallery opening Friday, January 9th from 7-10pm. So now you know and can mark both Brooklyn-based shows in your calendar to see works by these talented emerging artists!

Seen: David Choe signing at GR2

Looks like GR2 is getting a lot of love from the blog today, but all deserving. Giant Robot has both a great last minute gift show up (see Post It) – and they just hosted art superstar David Choe for a signing of his newly released “Choegal” toy from Ningyoshi toys.

The wooden toy has hand painted parts (though not by Dave) and we were able to pick up ours along with a shiny autograph from Dave. It is really a great toy – and you should probably get online, or into GR2 to order one quick as it is limited to only 1000 pieces.

Fans were picking up Choe toys, GR posters and the new Giant Robot Magazine with Choe’s cover art, all in hopes of getting a sketch. The fan above (a DD contributor) actually brought a paint set. David was nice enough to paint a little something…

…David tells us he is off to China in a few weeks to begin shooting his new project. Have fun in Beijing…stay away from the street meat! Keep reading for our pics, or discuss David’s work here:

Seen: Post-it Show @ GR2

Last weekend Giant Robot opened its annual “Post-It Show” with hundreds – and we mean hundreds – of pieces of original art on Post-It Notes.

With artwork from Gary Baseman, Brendan Monroe, Evah Fan, Buffmonster, Travis Lampe, Souther Salazar, Tim Biskup and dozens more this was a crazy opportunity to buy ridiculously small – but ridiculously affordable – pieces of original work by some of your favorite artists.

Best of all you can take your purchases right off the wall. While this means many pieces are already gone, there are still tons of great pieces to be had. DD just picked up a pair of Brendan Monroe’s, a Deth P Sun and four Evah Fan’s yesterday!

The show runs through January 14th but we wouldn’t wait if we were you.
