Shows: Houseguest: Frances Stark @ Hammer (10.16)

Beginning next week, the Hammer museum will introduce its latest installment in a series of artist-curated exhibitions collectively titled “Houseguest”. This exhibition, curated by Los Angeles-based Frances Stark, is comprised of selections from the Grunwald Center for the Graphic Arts’ comprehensive collection spanning the Renaissance to the present.

Stark’s project began without a specific theme; the artist dictated the content based on individual taste and opportunity. Ultimately, she gravitated toward figurative and metaphorical depictions of men and women. Exploring themes of creation, reproduction, pleasure, the essence of the body, relationships, identity, and death, Stark’s contribution investigates the relationship between the sexes.

Stark’s exhibition features exclusively prints and drawings from artists including Jacques Callot, Francisco Goya, Edgar Degas, Egon Schiele, Isabel Bishop, Kenneth Price, Mike Kelley, and Agnes Martin.
