Shag — Autumn’s Come Undone (11.21)

The Accomplices. Shag.

The Accomplices. Shag.

LA painter Josh Agle, Shag, has been painting celebratory images of  a glamorous California lifestyle for nearly a decade.   Amid mid-century modern architecture and Tiki statues, his characters have seemingly transitioned from one party to the next.   That was then, this is now.  Change is in the air.

As a reaction to changes in his personal life and a new-found self realization, Shag has begun to explore a  simpler perhaps more genuine lifestyle with a new collection of work for his  Autumn’s Come Undone solo opening this Saturday, November 21st (7-10 PM) @ Corey Helford Gallery.  As a quick summary, this is a darker Shag rendered in his signature style. Where characters once cut a rug, they now swim precariously with sharks, or relieve themselves into large crevasses. The new work includes ‘Dreamscapes’ a series of large-format limited-edition diptych and triptych giclees. Each Dreamscape is a limited-edition of five.   The Dreamscapes will be complimented by several new original paintings.

Interviews: Mia

Mia1

The artist who simply goes by the name Mia has come a long way in a very short time. Having shown at such galleries as Copro Gallery, Roq La Rue, Gallery1988 (LA & SF), La Luz de Jesus, and Ad Hoc Art (just to name a few), the artist known as Mia has made an incredible impact using her huge imagination and finely tuned artistic skills. Even more incredible is the young age at which she has already accomplished all of this. Having graduated from Otis College of Art & Design (Valedictorian of her class, no less) only 2 years ago, her list of exhibitions and sold out shows is almost unbelievable! I don’t know if I should be excited or frightened at the future potential of this incredible young artist.

On the brink of her second feature show at Corey Helford gallery in Los Angeles, I was lucky enough to grab a few minutes of Mia’s time for some questions regarding her past accomplishments, her upcoming exhibition and what the future may hold for this bright young art star.

Read on for the full interview after the jump…

Shows: Korin Faught @ CHG June 27th

Korin Faught, "Cassie"

Saturday June 27th from 7-10pm, Corey Helford Gallery will be opening what looks to be a compelling new exhibition by artist Korin Faught titled “Echo”.  This will be Korin’s sophomore show with Cory Helford, where she had her first solo debut in 2008.

Intentionally ambiguous, Faught’s paintings are open to interpretation. “It’s difficult to predict how people will respond to my work,”. “But I try to make images that are compelling and open-ended, full of mystery. Those are the images that resonate.

Seen: Sylvia Ji – Haute Epoch

Sylvia Ji unleashed an impressive new collection of work for Haute Epoch which opened tonight (4.11)@ Corey Helford Gallery in Culver City. Slyvia’s work blends an eye for fashion with striking portraiture made possible in part by strong technique. Blending glamour with pervasive references to latin american symbolism, the show drew a large and diverse crowd – with a lineup prior to the opening.

Adding to the experience, Corey Helford was screening a cool video montage of Slyvia’s creation process for the show – artfully shot and edited at a frenetic pace. Definitely a must see show.

Lauren Bergman, ‘CalHalla: Dreams of Future Passed’ Opens Tonight

Lauren Bergman, Future Perfect, acrylic on gessoed paper mounted on sintra, 40" x 60", 2008

Tonight, New York-based artist Lauren Bergman opens her exhibition CalHalla: Dreams of Future Passed, at Corey Helford Gallery in Culver City, California. After a lively political group show in New York City in November, Bergman turns her attention away from the White House in Washington D.C. to the cultural Mt. Olympus of California and its modernist architecture paradise. The exhibition, featured in the loft of the gallery space, will commence on Saturday, January 3, 2009 and run through January 21.  An opening reception will be held on Saturday, January 3 from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. with the artist in attendance.

The idealized female ideology and feminine utopia of America has long been a focal theme for Bergman and continues to feed her fascination and curiosity.  For this exhibition, however, Bergman employs “a new menu of cultural touchstones in the architectural backdrop” as she strives to decipher the “California dreaming” mythology that enamors and resonates with our modern society, hence the splicing of “Valhalla” and “California” to become “CalHalla.” Even as a young girl, Bergman was drawn to the modern creations of architects like Richard Neutra, Pierre Koenig, John Lautner, and especially Frank Lloyd Wright.  “Their forms and lines were compelling and I would find myself drawing them over and over,” she says. “They [the houses] would appear to me like a vision of the future.”

Seen: Clowns!

Colin Christian

Colin Christian

Corey Helford celebrated  a classic American icon with the opening of the Clowns! group show this past Saturday evening (11.15).  The impressive group of artists offered tremendously varied interpretations of the theme – many stayed fairly close to popular conceptions of clowns while others presented much more subdued and subtle interpretations.

While there were many excellent pieces, perhaps the most visually arresting was sculptor Colin Christian’s Freaky’ Deaky sculpture (above).  This piece follows the artist’s signature female head shape yet changes things up with a powerful snarl — great work.

While some have remarked that they weren’t moved by the theme, in my opinion the draw for this show is the tremendous talent assembled including some of LA’s brightest painters + in-demand UK artists who showed courtesy of Stolen Space Gallery.   Clowns! continues through November 29th.

Enjoy the opening pics.
