Studio Visit – Tim Biskup on ‘The Mystic Chords of Memory’

Recently Dailydujour had the pleasure of  visiting Tim Biskup’s studio as he was finishing up pieces for his next solo, The Mystic Chords of Memory, which opens this Thursday, June 4th at Iguapop in Barcelona.   A reference to Abraham Lincoln’s inaugural address, the title of the new show hints at an awakening from dark times and points to a more promising future.

While his work is at some level highly public as it is viewed in galleries and on numerous products, Biskup’s work is in reality intensely introspective.  Painting is a means of self-expression and perhaps more importantly discovery.  While his recent work has taken a turn for the darker mirroring uncertainty in his life, this newest collection of work is colorful and joyous matching a new found happiness and comfort-level in his personal development.

In terms of the aesthetic elements, Biskup returns to his use of facets a style he “loves”.  This new show also sees him  painting bubbly, voluptuous women — a very enjoyable first for him.  Fun and joy of creation was a theme that ran through the conversation during our visit.  Tim Biskup continues to evolve his painting style as a means of self-expression — a continually stimulating journey.

Seen: Nobody Walks in LA from Barcelona

Presented by Atticus BCN and Dailydujour, Nobody Walks in LA opened on Saturday evening (1.23) at the Masters Art gallery in Barcelona.  The show features a diverse selection of work from LA-area based painters and marks one of the first such group exhibitions of its kind in lower Europe.

The opening drew a strong and diverse crowd throughout the evening.  While many were familiar with the artists and the general aesthetic, many others took this show as an introduction of sorts.  Thanks to the efforts of Atticus’s Tina Ziegler, the opening was a celebration of new contemporary art in many forms – from the paintings featured in the show to an exhibition of  custom lowrider bicycles and a funky fashion show featuring the new collection from MYBS on models wearing plush headwear designed by Barcelona illustrator BTOY.

Thank to you all the artists, Atticus, Masters Art Gallery and the show sponsors.  Nobody Walks in LA runs through February 10th @ Atticus Gallery. For full info on the pieces and availability, please see the official preview.

Emilio Sick – A La Atenciòn De Nadie (11.7)

Tercer Ojo (Third Eye). Emilio Sick.

Tercer Ojo (Third Eye). Emilio Sick.

Spanish Artist Emilio Subirà better known as Emilio Sick explores the depths of human emotion with his powerful sculptures that balance a journey into the macabre with a humorous outlook. It’s often said that true art is work that people care about, that provokes a reaction – be it love or hate. We agree with that concept. Emilio’s work is certainly provocative and head turning, and in our humble opinion worth watching.

Emilio will present a set of sculptures and figurines for his solo, A La Atenciòn De Nadie (To the Attention of No One), which opens on November 7th at Atticus Gallery in Barcelona, Spain. While the figurines are pretty nice, the sculptures are the clear highlights – at least for this blogger.
