Munky Bidness @ SDCC 09

After the sun goes down, comic-con turns from a packed exhibition hall and line upon line waiting for sought-after collectibles to parties and plenty of them. This past Thursday,   Munky King continued its annual and much welcomed SDCC party at Bar Basic  along with co-presenter Hi-Fructose.

Looking to add a pulse-quickening jolt to the live art portion of the party, both Jim Mahfood and Buff Monster painted on female models with strategically placed tape x’s.  In the main painting area, Carlos Ramos, Attaboy and Chris Ryniak created original paintings on the fly – strong and diverse results.

A wave of artists and industry folks filtered in through the evening including Simone Legno, Angry Woebots, Yoskay Yamamoto, kaNO, Diego Marchioni, Jim Crawford, Emi Uchiki, Jesse Hernandez, Marka27 to mention a few.

Seen: Attaboy – “A Touch of Evil”

For his ‘A Touch of Evil’ solo opening this past Saturday (6.13), Artist/Hi-Fructose Co-Founder Attaboy filled POVevolving with an eye-bulging amount of art that seamlessly combines fantastic and futuristic imagery.  We’re glad we caught the opening, albeit at the end of our gallery crawl when most of the crowd had already come and gone.

Perhaps the first thing one notices when entering the gallery are the  large number of enamel on clear acrylic panel pieces.  Done with intricate stencils, these pieces are impressive as they  offer an unusual, floating display of his signature mix of motley and alternatively beautiful characters.  Though we’ve seen Attaboy show these types of pieces before, the large array of panels on display  for this show really amplifies the effect. Strength in numbers, without a doubt.

While all of Attaboy’s work is quite detailed, his colored pencil works on paper are shall we say ‘hyper-detailed’.  If you’ve always admired meticulous and intricate line work, these deserve a closer look.

While his paintings and drawings are immediately recognizable, Attaboy has long created 3D representations of his work in small-run, hand-done resin figures, as well as production vinyl and plush toys.  Several 3D offerings were on tap for A Touch of Evil including his new Goobery designer plush (complete with string-activated sound box) which were ready for the plucking in a Goobery Patch installation in the rear of the gallery.

The show also marked the public debut of Attaboy’s Winged Shmee resin in unpainted prototype form.  Set for a run of eight individually hand-painted pieces, the well-designed figure gives 3D form to the more serene aspects of his art whereas previous resin editions have featured untamed, slightly feral, and definitely unusual characters.

Finally — sculpted in hyper detail by J. Shea, the Brine Queen installation featuring 5 of Attaboy’s creatures independently suspended above the show floor is probably the strongest sculptural translation of his art to-date.  From the large queen to the complimentary pieces, this one-of-a-kind installation drew plenty of looks and attention from show goers.

For the full preview and price list, be sure to check out the gallery’s official A Touch of Evil  show page which runs through July 8th, 2009.

Shows: Attaboy @ POV Evolving in LA

Daniel Seifert, better known as Attaboy, presents his first solo show in two years at POV Evolving Gallery in Chinatown. Atta presents an onslaught of meticulously handcut shadow casting spray varnish stenciled plastic pieces, elaborate “exploded view” drawings, and a Gooberry Patch in the back room, where visitors can pick an unripened talking pull string Gooberry Plush and take one home to abuse. After 5 years of waiting, they’ve finally arrived, and they’re still not ripe.
The show is being sponsored by Hi-Fructose Magazine and Gelaskins. Atta tells us that if you come out to the show early enough you will be able to snag some iphone, ipod and laptop skins of his recent work. We always like freebies.

Atta has a great interview on HiFructose as well here.

Opening reception: Saturday June 13th from 6 – 10 pm.
