'Maria I Still Love You' Vasmoulakis and collaborator Paris Koutsikos

LeBasse Projects is excited to present, ‘Is Everybody Happy?,’ the first US solo exhibition from Greek artist Alexandros Vasmoulakis. In this anticipated solo project, Vasmoulakis brings his first major body of work to the US after becoming recognized across Europe for his work both on the streets and in galleries.

Vasmoulakis is mostly known by his work in the streets of Athens, Greece as he has painted on and embellished various buildings across the city and is expected to do the same here in Los Angeles. While recognized for his street work, Vasmoulakis’ paintings are beginning to reflect the maturity of his work as an artist.

His works’ main theme is the psychology of his figures – the struggle and the element of conflict dominates in the pairs of his figures as well as in each character separately. With the perceptive analysis of his characters Vasmoulakis achieves through his work he persuades us that he has penetrated into their mentality by holding a role of a competent and gifted anatomist and of an expressive soul searcher.

‘Is Everybody Happy’ will be Vasmoulakis’ first US solo exhibition.

ed wave

This March LeBasse Projects opens a solo show for Greek artist Alexandros Vasmoulakis but that’s not the only thing keeping us busy. The LBP artists are keeping busy worldwide…

Edwin Ushiro (pictured) opens his first NY solo show with Sloan Fine Art on the 24th. Nate Frizzell also has a solo show, his debut in the UK at Bo.Lee Gallery in Bath. From what I hear, both are already selling their shows on preview so better reach out to the galleries now. Eric Fortune just sold out his mini-show at the High Fructose curated exhibit as well…so better get on the list for his next show with us in October.

Murals: Alexandros Vasmoulakis in Athens

Greek artist Alexandros Vasmoulakis, showing with LeBasse Projects in 2010, just finished another large scale mural in Athens. No guerilla work here, as the project was commissioned for Greek, film director Nikos Perakis.

Perakis is shooting a docu-fiction film which shows the life and the difficulties of young artists today. Vasmoulakis plays himself in the film while working on the mural.

Alexandros tells us:
“…according to the script, this mural is a commission from a big company and the boss is not satisfied at all with my work so a hard conflict between him and me rises. Iit was not too bad to play there, i dare say it was funny…”

While the mural is a commission, the content was left to Alexandros and he was strongly influenced from the wide riots that had taken place in athens in December 2008.

We are looking forward to his show next year, his first in LA and first solo in the US, at LeBasse Projects.

Culver City Artwalk @ LeBasse Projects

Saturday was the 4th Annual Culver City Artwalk and our 1st year participating in the new gallery. With a much larger space tha last year, we still managed to fill the gallery with walkers, baby-strollers and dogs. We also had a new show on view with work from gallery represented artists like Nate Frizzell, Edwin Ushiro, Tessar Lo and Yoskay Yamamoto, alog with work from some new artists to the gallery like Thomas Doyle, Morgan Slade, Alexandros Vasmoulakis and Joe Black.

Some of the new faces created some real showstoppers. Joe Black’s 2000 button collage was creating a bottleneck all day into the back rooms, and we were forced to post interns to protect Thomas Doyle’s sculptures from the hands of eager children and their equally enthralled parents.

Shows: Alexandros Vasmoulakis in Athens

The revolution begins from within. So Alexandros Vasmoulakis is introduced with his first major solo exhibition at AART in Athens, Greece. The street…yet oh so fine…artist delivers a strong body of work that we wish was local.

Vasmoulakis’ work is that rare combination of street appeal with aesthetically pleasing graphic design elements and technically proficient painting and drawing style.

His present work culls from faces and sentiments. Wide-open colorful eyes, shattered bodies, at times dynamic at times paralyzed isolated or coupled Vasmoulakis’ individuals debate openly with the audience in the most sharp and eloquent way. Hey Ho! they scream through Syd Barrett’s lyrics, Here we go ever so high, rising in revolt initially against some obscure, erotic probably, opponent but essentially against their same self.
