Alex Pardee – Hiding from the Normals (10.6)

Evidence1 imaginatively creepy creatures, Alex Pardee will open his engrossing Hiding from the Normals solo tomorrow, Tuesday October 6th (7-10 PM) @ Gallery 1988 Los Angeles.  The show is based around Alex’s investigations into the recent disappearance of David Weeks who believed that an unseen world of mutants thrives just below our feet.  The paintings are based on ‘evidence’ collected by Weeks including his notes and sketches.

In addition to the new paintings, Alex will offer a new signed and numbered print limited to just 50 pieces and show catalog/book, “The Marrow: Excerpts from the Journals of Willaim Dekker” (ed. of 200).

This is Alex’s largest solo to-date and will be his last for the coming year or so. Given the timing and the subject matter, Alex is bringing some Halloween spirit to the event.  He’s going to dress up in costume and is asking fans to do the same.  There’s added incentive as well – prizes for best custom (best guy and best girl).

We’re excited about this one – Alex’s gnarly art + a fleshed-out backstory should make for a great opening.

Seen: Alex Pardee – Frolicking Nightmares

[Alex Pardee opened his Frolicking Nightmares solo this past Friday at Andenken Gallery in Colordo.  Dailydujour contributor Josh Witham reports from Colorado with great shots of the opening and his take on the show.]

With his recent Walrus Rider vinyl figure in the bag, Alex Pardee took a very monotonous drive from California to Colorado in order premier his new body of work at Andenken Gallery in Denver. The show, entitled “Frolicking Nightmares – Portraits of Beasts that Dwell in a Sexier Dimension”  was themed around a group of ’sexy’ monsters who would probably eat your face off, but look really hot doing it. In addition, there were a few black and white drawings as well as some of Alex’s more traditional works; some with hilarious stories to coincide with the piece.

Alex also took two days before the show to paint a gigantic mural to coincide with his ‘Ghost Boners;’ a series of very affordable originals depicting ghosts with… well… boners. The show ran from 7pm to Midnight, with Alex Pardee making sure he spent time with every fan who approached him.  The show was definitely a local success; with what seemed like hundreds of people flocking in throughout the hours to view what came to be an almost sold out show.

Preview of “The Art of Rebellion” at Robert Berman Gallery

I attended a press preview of the rad “Art of Rebellion” show at the Robert Berman Gallery in Bergamot Station last night. Presented by Harley-Davidson, the show gathers 11 artists to present their take on the theme of rebellion. Each artist painted a motorcycle gas tank, in addition to presenting a solo 2-D piece. The art is for sale, and a portion of the proceeds will be donated to Art Matters.

The show officially opens Feb. 7, with a reception from 7 PM-10 PM. It has been extended until Feb. 21, so be sure to check it out.
