Event Photos: Sumi Ink Club @ THIS, LA Gallery

Sumi_2

Saturday afternoon THIS los angeles welcomed Kelly Lynn Jones of Little Paper Planes and the Sumi Ink Club to their gallery space.  We went down to participate, make some fun ink drawings, and hang out.  If you haven’t checked out or heard about the Sumi Ink Club, then I really encourage you to participate if you get a chance.  It’s super fun, relaxing, and mellow. You even might get to take home one of the collaborative works.

from http://thislosangeles.com/blog/

The Sumi Ink Club is a los angeles-based drawing collective founded in 2005 by Sarah Anderson and Luke Fischbeck. The group holds regular open meetings to execute topsy-turvy, detailed, collaborative drawings using ink on paper. In each of its permutations, sumi ink club uses group drawings as a means to open and fortify social interactions that bleed into everyday life. sumi ink club is non-hierarchical: all ages, all humans, all styles.

Evan Hecox Series for Curated by Arkitip

Picture 5Artist and designer Evan Hecox’s fascination with the urban landscape recently went on display on Incase products for the sixth installment of Curated by Arkitip. The Evan Hecox series has been issued in three limited editions: London, New York and Tokyo. As the project’s first artist to present a series of products, Hecox brings to life nontraditional depictions of the famed cities and their associated national emblems on signature MacBook Sleeves and iPhone Slider Cases.

Drawing inspiration from the complexity of the modern metropolis, Hecox’s stylistic approach is based on the process of amplification as it affects form and color: breaking down the image, removing certain elements and emphasizing others. In his original artistry for Curated by Arkitip, Hecox filters the mundane into captivating illustrations of London, New York and Tokyo seemingly filled with narratives beyond the images themselves, and applies them to MacBook Sleeves. The Hecox Slider Cases complement the three Sleeves, bearing instantly recognizable national symbols of the three cities. Hecox re-imagined the symbols through his stylistic approach, resulting in artistic interpretations that are both familiar and new.

Hecox has found success both as a commercial and fine artist recognized for his unique stylistic approach that blends photography, hand drawn illustration and graphic design. With an extensive portfolio that includes skateboard graphics, illustrations, books, television ads and fine art, Hecox has been exhibited in galleries across the globe, including Los Angeles, Sydney, London and Tokyo. The video element to accompany the release of the product line is now online. Similar to the Chronicles,  the video will give the viewer a closer look at the process and inspirations of the artist. The Hecox products for Curated by Arkitip are available now are available today at Arkitip, Incase better boutiques and Apple Store locations worldwide.

Seen: Mark Jenkins – Meaning is Overrated

29_DSC_6926

Street artist Mark Jenkins opened his Meaning is Overrated solo this past Thursday @ Carmichael Gallery.  Riffing on the human form, Jenkins offered several intriguing sculptures created entirely with tape.  From the surreal including Spokes (female/bicycle hybrid) and a fur covered man urinating on a hydrant to the subtle man in a hoodie without a face, the show challenges initial perceptions.   The inclusion of a clear see-through miniature carousel horse serves to introduce new collectors and fans to Jenkins’s unusual choice of medium.
