Seen: David Choe signing at GR2

Looks like GR2 is getting a lot of love from the blog today, but all deserving. Giant Robot has both a great last minute gift show up (see Post It) - and they just hosted art superstar David Choe for a signing of his newly released “Choegal” toy from Ningyoshi toys.

The wooden toy has hand painted parts (though not by Dave) and we were able to pick up ours along with a shiny autograph from Dave. It is really a great toy - and you should probably get online, or into GR2 to order one quick as it is limited to only 1000 pieces.

Fans were picking up Choe toys, GR posters and the new Giant Robot Magazine with Choe’s cover art, all in hopes of getting a sketch. The fan above (a DD contributor) actually brought a paint set. David was nice enough to paint a little something…

…David tells us he is off to China in a few weeks to begin shooting his new project. Have fun in Beijing…stay away from the street meat! Keep reading for our pics, or discuss David’s work here:

Seen: Yoshitomo Nara @ Blum & Poe

Last night was the opening for Yoshitomo Nara’s new show at Blum and Poe in Culver City. A star studded crowd was easily eclipsed by the paintings and installation from Nara and his sidekick Graf. Upon entering the show we were greeted by an enormous painting on wood panel of Nara’s youthful superheroine rocking out on a guitar.

Turning into Gallery I, the “California Orange Covered Wagon” installation greeted us with an accompanying painting titled “Lonely” - which seemed to be the running theme for the show. The “Wagon” was filled with small pieces, toys, sketches, photographs, old mail and other knick-knacks that have had some personal touch with the artist. Check out the gallery below for images from inside the wagon…

Vinyl Collectible photographer Brian McCarty recently shot Yoskay’s “Koibito” prior to last weeks release party at Munky King. Thanks to our friends at HiFructose, Brian has a great interview talking about the shoot, cold water and shrinkage.

Yoskay Yamamoto’s Koibito Launch Party

Platinum Plus aka Yoskay Yamamoto released his Koibito at Munky King last night. Even in a down economy, the fans lined up around the corner to pick up the two colorways that just came out. The “smoke” black was awesome - and if you were lucky enough to grab one of the customs it came with a hand screened bandana and a small gocco print.

The limited “smoke” and the prints all sold out quickly, but I think there might be a few of the general release koibito at Munky King - or you can start lining up now for February’s White and Silver release being run through the gallery and Paper Tiger.

We are getting ready for this weekends show, but Do not forget Thursday night’s release party for Yoskay Yamamoto’s Koibito vinyl at Munky King. Yoskay is also releasing a series of gocco prints and raffling off a painting. How lucky will you be?

If you want one, better lineup early…

The wrap up…and another show…

Just returned from Art Basel and Miami, so naturally like a crazy man we have not one - but three - shows booked on Friday. We have a great solo show in Gallery I, with Evan B Harris and a killer lineup of work in our annual ‘Gifted’ group show. This year everything is 12″ x 12″ so nice and portable.

I will leave you with a teaser of Eric Fortune’s piece for the show…stay tuned though as we should have the preview out on Thursday. You can always visit the site for more info.

I should get around to posting some more Basel pics - just need a day or two. Edwin Ushiro created a beautiful piece that we sadly did not get to bring with us…its featured at the head of the page.

Seen: GenArt Vanguard and Obey in Miami

Full night of activity here in Miami with the Scion Installation Tour, the GenArt Vanguard party and after hours with Obey. GenArt’s Vanguard Event, partially thrown by Daily D’s very own Debra Anderson, was a packed house. With several galleries and artists in their own mini-fair it was probably one of the largest parties of the weekend.

I am sure Debra will give us some more coverage on her blog, but it was a great venue and an excellent party for GenArt’s first attempt at throwing their own fair - certainly stop by during the day to check it out if you are here in Miami.

The after hours at the Shore Club got a bit wild though…

Seen: Bridge Fair and afterhours

A little behind in posts here, so I am going to keep them short and sweet. Two night ago we did the Bridge Fair preview. So far the weakest of the fairs with more “shock” art and seemingly tourist geared art. A few nice things, but the camera was certainly not out as much as it has been anywhere else.

After hours were great though as we hit the Beautiful/Decay Magazine party at Essex where it was a who’s who of artists and gallery owners including Ron English, Mars 1, Blek le Rat, Marci Washington and more. Also met some great collectors that I had only met over the phone. Great event all around…

From the B/D party the gang headed to the Delano Hotel and the Emmanuel Perrotin x Pharell x Le Baron party…

Seen: Preview at Aqua Hotel and after hours…

The Aqua Hotel kicked off its preview last night with a nice party hosted by Campari. The courtyard of the Hotel filled up quickly and I sadly was too busy chatting to take many pictures.

As the Preview came to an  end, we headed off to the Deitch projects party at the Raleigh Hotel.

Luckily for us, we were in time to see the performance - and I do mean performance - from The Gossip. Band front woman, Beth Ditto, gave a stellar performance to hipsters including style machine, Rachel Zoe and iconic Fab Five Freddy.
