Shows: ‘A Decade With No Name’ in Oakland

IMG_8679

Bay Area art enthusiast and Hi-Fructose Web Editor Ken Harman recently opened his first curatorial endeavor. His show titled  “A Decade With No Name” is a pop-up style exhibit at Oakland’s Jack london Square. I wish I could see it in person, but Ken was kind enough to forward some exclusive images from last weekends opening.

From Ken “From the politically and socially inspired street art of Eddie Colla, to the three-dimensional monstrous cake sculptures of Scott Hove, to Brett Amory’s figurative paintings, Amanda Lopez’ Dia de los Muertos photographs, Monica Canilao’s found object installations and Emory Douglas’ historical Black Panther graphic agitation, this showcase serves as a veritable who’s-who of the East Bay’s emerging and established artist community.”

A “Decade With No Name”
54 Washington St. Oakland, CA
Open: Saturday and Sunday through September 12th.

Preview: David Choong Lee @ LeBasse Projects

DSC_0446

LeBasse Projects is proud to announce David Choong Lee’s exhibition, ‘Acquiring Signal’ – his first major solo in Los Angeles

‘Acquiring Signal’ will be David Choong Lee’s second major Installation based exhibition. Completely wrapping the gallery walls, Lee’s 500+ piece installation pays homage to street people and the cities they inhabit. A combination of paintings and sculptures, his large scale wall collage will be his most inventive architectural work to date.

Based out of San Francisco’s street art movement, Korean born artist Lee reflects on social conditions within youth culture, urban environments and generation “next,” tapping into both American and Korean visual aesthetics. Sociopolitical and economic issues surrounding homelessness and youth populations are at the heart of Lee’s paintings, which play with the subcultures’ politics of power, judgment and perception. Lee’s on-location assemblages embody concepts that float between his choice of subject matter, material and technique. The graffiti-like amalgamations fold in traditional figurative portraiture and promote public discourse, challenging the notion of what is considered fine art.

DDDetail

Artist Eric Fortune is opening a small show in Seattle this weekend at Roq la Rue. Shows: Matt Haber @ BLDG Gallery KY

img_5973

NY based Matt Haber opens a show at BLDG Gallery in Kentucky this weekend with quite a few new paintings and drawings. Haber’s dynamic paintings

This exhibit encompasses new work by the artist, as well as the unveiling of Haber’s first life-size sculpture.

Haber’s artwork is connected to a civilization that once existed in the artist’s own mind. He presents a catalogue of characters in scenarios, which explore moral and ethical dilemmas in a stage-like setting. Referencing existing allegory and pop culture he creates a familiar feel to his works. Within them you may see the innocence of the 1950’s, the industrial invention of the Victorian Era, or the eloquence of the Rococo Era.

This will be the artist’s third solo exhibition with the gallery, and will mark his most diverse body of work to date. The show will reflect a continuation of intimate statements of self-expression that began in his last series of exhibitions.

The exhibit is an amazing combination of painting and sculpture showing off Yamamoto’s range of talents. 100 black resin sculpts will be on display and for sale only at the opening…and in addition a series of polished metal versions will also be out. Studio Visit: Morgan Slade

cover

Artist Morgan Slade is getting ready for his July show at LeBasse Projects and was nice enough to let us tag along for his photo shoot portion of his work. In the past Morgan has photographed models in his own studio but for his July show he is collaborating with cutting edge designer Betsey Johnson. The shoot this weekend was at the flagship LA store and Slade used both clothing and models from the Betsey Johnson ranks.

If you have not seen Morgan Slade’s work, the artist starts with ‘masked’ portraits of his models and then creates unique mixed media pieces by painting and collaging over the one-off images. Slade just had a very successful show at San Francisco’s Shooting Gallery and will be seen this summer in LA, NY and European shows.

We had a good time messing around the store while Morgan worked, images after the jump. Keep up to date here as an interview with the artist should be coming soon…

Opening: Thomas Doyle @ LeBasse Projects (4.24)

Picture 4
Opening in our Project Room, the LeBasse Projects presents Thomas Doyle’s first Los Angeles solo show. Doyle’s work mines the debris of memory through the creation of intricate worlds sculpted in 1:43 scale and smaller. Often sealed under glass, the works depict the remnants of things past – whether major, transformational experiences, or the quieter moments that resonate loudly throughout a life.

For ‘Collateral Damage,’ Doyle continues to explore the impact of memory through his Distillation Series. Based on the premise that a personality can be distilled down to certain key formative events, the work in this series centers on the home and family life. Doyle begins with this safe, archetypal space, then distorts reality through a warped and dreamlike lens, in much the same way the mind recalls events through the fog of time. The result is a world where houses are inverted, earth crumbles away, and people sink into the ground – all trapped under glass and frozen in time.

Thomas Doyle :: ‘Collateral Damage’
Opening Saturday, April 24th, 2010
LeBasse Projects
6023 Washington Blvd.

There is an excellent interview with Doyle posted here on the Erratic Phenomena blog as well.

Studio Visit: Kevin E. Taylor

DSC_0758

Kevin Earl Taylor is one of the fresh faces in the San Francisco art scene. After recent shows at the Shooting Gallery and in LA at LeBasse Projects, Taylor is huddled into his studio carving out fresh work and creating some new directions for his oil paintings. His large studio space sits just off Union Square in SF but the Taylor’s paintings could not be farther from the ‘tourist’ styled galleries surrounding his neighborhood. We look forward to seeing what Kevin has to show us in the near future…

Studio Visit: David Choong Lee

DSC_0725

Artist David Choong Lee is coming off last year’s massive exhibit at the University of Arizona’s Museum and is freshly moved into a new studio space next door to San Francisco’s iconic Luggage Store Gallery. The new studio is enormous and looks to give Choong Lee the space he needs for his ever expanding body of work.

Moving away from figurative painting, Choong Lee is now experimenting and creating more abstract work after a psychedelic trip to Yosemite to paint with Mars-1, Oliver Vernon and Robert Hardgrave. I was fortunate to get a peek into the studio and catch a few glimpses of whats coming out. David has his next major show at LeBasse Projects in Culver City this August.
