Tim Biskup opens his new solo, ‘Charge’ @ Martha Otero Gallery on Saturday (9.28) with a new collection of energetic and eclectic pieces reflecting his numerous influences. For Biskup, the show’s title refers both to a sense of renewal and empowerment as well as more a abstract notion of seeking out concepts and ideas carrying ‘charge’ beyond the senses of the less perceptive or attuned. The work we’ve seen so far seems to be a visually arresting and strikingly coherent blend of styles and motifs that the artist has worked with over his ongoing evolution as an artist. Longtime followers of his work will recognize elements of his mid-century modern inspired work as well as his popular stable of characters, and a continued refinement of his geometric, faceted aesthetic. Rather than merely incorporating and honoring his past work, Biskup seems to have found the energy and inspiration to express the interconnections, interplay and discourse between what some might see as disparate elements. The new work is exciting, filled with colorful characters in various forms and evocative phrases. Perhaps the realized meaning of the exhibition’s title is the affect the work has on its viewers.
