Allison Sommers unleashed her visual musings on war and its consequences with ‘Potter’s Field’ which opened this past Saturday (1.7) @ Thinkspace in Culver City. The new work blends the artist’s motley and curious characters with an early 20th century war motiff. The tolls of conflict are plainly seen through littered corpses and open wounds rendered in stunning detail at an impossibly small scale, a time consuming feat that along with her creature menagerie has quickly become Sommers’ visual signature. The exhibition’s title seems to suggest the dehumanizing aspects of war and may also allude to war as a metaphor for society’s current economic upheaval.
