JR kicked off his TED Wish, Inside Out, with his talk on Wednesday followed by the opening of a special exhibit at the nearby Phantom Galleries Long Beach. Inside Out inverts the equation of public display turning consumers into producers. People are encouraged to photograph members of their community deserving of additional exposure and recognition. By using insideoutproject.net, large printouts of the photograph can be acquired and then pasted wherever people deem fit. The goal is a global project which elevates the awareness and voice of average citizens of the world. As a first step, the exhibit in Long Beach features a remarkable photo booth which quickly outputs huge black and white posters of folks. Whether they paste up the images or install them somewhere more private, it’s a novel idea. In addition, the exhibition features photographs mounted in aluminum of JR’s seminal in situ installations.
