As part of Artwalk 2010 presented by LACMA Muse, Gary Baseman continued to expand his art beyond the confines of 2D canvases and gallery walls with Giggle and Pop – a series of live performances held at the La Brea Tar Pits this past Saturday afternoon.  The performances featured a dozen costumed pink Chou Chous and a dozen tar pit girls singing Carina Round’s Giggle and Pop song while performing Sarah Elgart’s whimsical choreography.

Dailydujour was on-hand for the 1 PM performance which started with a dramatic entrance for the 24 performers.  After marching up a a flight of stairs to the outdoor roof area of the Page Museum, the Chous and the Tar Pit Girls r briefly entertained the audience waiting on the lawn below.  After some brief Chou Chou calisthenics, the Chou Chous rolled down the hill – quite a sight.

In between the three scheduled performances, Gary Baseman, the Chous and the Tar Pit Girls engaged the audience to become part of the event.  Fun loving folks who learned the song and cast their inhibitions aside to join a dancing circle, were rewarded with a purple silk-screened sash featuring his characters dancing hand in hand.

With this latest whimsical event, Gary Baseman continues to reinvent himself as an artist and find new ways to share his ‘pervasive art’ with the public.
