Seen: Amanda Visell – Primeval Love

Amanda Visell opened her self-produced Primeval Love solo this past Friday (4.9) for a one-night showing at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles. The lavish setting anchored by two Dinosaur skeletons nicely complimented the theme of the show which envisions an alternate unfolding of history from the beginning of life on.  Her most personal body of work to-date includes a large number of paintings as well as a few limited-edition sculptures which she sculpted and cast herself.  The paintings showcase  her newer aesthetic which has evolved over the past year and a half or so.  Her signature style based on classic cartoons,  has given way to a more organic figurative approach which makes use of abstract textures.

The reception for the one-night show featured a a special installation with a lovely model riding a castle elephant constructed of masonite as well as live music provided by the eclectic Petrojvic Blasting Company. For artwork availability, please see the official show preview which includes ordering info on her show book/catalog (ed of 400, $15).
