LA artist Rob Sato is on the move. From his recent exposure in Juxtapoz, Giant Robot and his inclusion in the group show for Giant Robot’s Biennale 2, his hyper-detailed mingling of historic and imaginative elements has proven quite addictive. As he completes the final prep for his Junk History solo opening this Saturday at Giant Robot San Francisco, Dailydujour dropped by his studio to get a closer look at some of the show pieces.
Junk History will be anchored by two large pieces – the island piece shown on the flier as well as “Pastoral Future” featuring a decayed ‘mech built out of technology from a bygone era – WWII planes and weaponry. Both of these paintings are packed with detail which reward the patient and thorough viewer. Be sure to spend some time on the detail shots (‘mech closeups via GRSF) – plenty to see and absorb. A quick note on references, sometimes source material is as close as an artist’s toy shelf – Pastoral Future is based on Rob’s Robotech Transformer which is missing it’s right arm as is the large hulking mech in the painting. In addition to the two new large pieces, Rob will also be offering numerous tiny faux photographic slide paintings, each with an accompanying caption prepared on his vintage typewriter. As with his larger pieces, Rob’s eye (and hand) for detail are on display in these micro pieces.
This goes without saying, but if you’re in San Francisco or nearby definitely check out Junk History which opens this Saturday, February 13th (6:30 – 10:30)
