LA painter Coop opened his first LA solo in over three years on Friday at Corey Helford gallery. Dailydujour took a look at his new work on Thursday evening during a VIP preview. Several artists and celebrities came out for the preview including the legendary Robert Williams, Matt Groening, Bob Dob, Buff Monster, Luke Chueh, and Diva Zappa. A definite treat to see low brow pioneer and Juxtapoz co-founder Williams.
Coop’s larger pieces are quite impressive with heavily layered images featuring hand-done half-tones, character outlines, stenciled elements and some of his classic characters. The dots on the two diptychs really pop off the pieces at distance for a mesmerizing effect.
In addition to his iconic devil, Coop also featured new characters including a pill-shaped riff on Mickey Mouse and a young reaper character – Lil Mort. Lil Mort is also the subject of Coop’s first vinyl art toy which is upcoming from Munky King. In addition to the standard black edition, there will also be an exclusive red Corey Helford edition.
Coop’s love of toys was on display not only with the prototypes of his new figure, but also with an Ultraman appearance on one of the larger pieces (above)– a fitting reference to his impressive collection of vintage Japanese toys.
While the ‘low-brow’ term is often applied broadly and somewhat carelessly, Coop’s art epitomizes the genre. If you missed the opening and are local, definitely plan to check out his new work in person. See the official show page @ Corey Helford.
