Seen: Allison Sommers – A Brief History

Allison Sommers’s opened her ‘A Brief History’ solo in Thinkspace’s Project this past Friday (5.8) one of three openings at the gallery.  For her largest collection of work so far, Sommers presented a focused look on the green long-necked creatures who have made appearances in several of her previous paintings. These sharply dressed creatures can be quite nasty – hedonistic, quarrelsome and sometimes even murderous.  Sommers’ portraits and pastoral scenes feature lots of details and impressively rendered characters.

Showing a willingness to explore new mediums, Sommers also offered her Ligatures series of paper clay sculptures featuring lynched long-neck fellows suspended from the hangman’s noose.  Each deceased creature comes with an explanation of his or her crimes in a tiny envelope.

To this point Allison Sommers has been quietly attracting collectors’s attention.  This strong show should raise awareness of her work among a much larger audience.  Check the official show page to browse available pieces.
